Is painting a back plate to a GPU a bad idea?

Use high temperature paint.

You can get them from Pepboys or Autozone.

(Hey guys new here and kind of new to forums as well so my apologize in advance)

 

Just looking for some insight from anyone who might know what kind of issues a project like painting a back plate might cause if any. For those wondering my GPU is a 970 Reference with a black back plate and i wanted the back plate to match my color scheme. I was not going to paint the side that comes in contact with the PCB it self or any other components.

My GTX980ti Zotac Amp Extreme came with a painted backplate. I think they use a special paint though so it can still transfer heat well.

Its actually one of the easiest, as well as the least intrusive thing you can do to your graphics card exterior. My answer is: only if you plan on not dropping the gpu in water or setting it on fire between taking the back-plate off and putting it back on.

the backplate doesnt really dissipate much heat to begin with, it'll probably be fine

Yes you can paint the backplate without any issue and high temp paint is not mandatory as it will not get hot enough to affect it, regular spray paint or ideally the automotive paint would be best. Just be sure to remove it before painting as it will give cleaner lines and not have to deal with masking.
