Expected Big Pascal Release date?

Some sources I've seen said it releases somewhere from April to June, while others say Early Q3?

big pascal is not shipping in 2016...what you will see though is the ''small'' pascal...the sucessor to the GTX 970 and GTX 980.

sucessor to titanX/980ti is in 2017

Whats your opinion? Get 980 ti when the price starts to drop because of "small" pascal, or just buy "small pascal"

probably small pascal...i think the GTX 1080 or whatever they call it should be about the same price or maybe a bit cheaper...and should be a bit faster than a 980ti i think.

As far as what's been unveiled so far, Big Pascal is far, far away.

Expect something else soon, not Big Pascal.

980Ti, Fury X and GP100 are certainly large cards. And they have a chip size nearby 600mm^2, GP100 being just north of it. However, lets take a look at just how long it took for Nvidia and AMD to sell these gigantic chips, because they are gigantic. A 600mm^2 chip is not big, it's huge. It's not normal, the largest 40mm chip was the 580 at 520mm^2. The only reason we got a 600mm^2 chip in the first place was because TSMC messed up, so AMD and Nvidia had to skip the 22mm transistor size, and go down to 14/16nm Finfet.

 

On a 300mm Wafer.

520mm^2 = 105 chips

601mm^2 = 91 chips

610mm^2 = 89 chips

 

Keep in mind that a Wafer is a circle, size is calculated in diameter. The current largest Wafer is 300mm wide, and is not expected to increase in size before at least 2020. Chips however, are square. Now i'm sure most of you can see the problem of cutting a square shape out of a circle. Regardless of how well you plan or cut, waste material is an inherent problem. You can increase efficiency by cutting smaller squares, but small chip equals low performance. This is part of the reason why the 980Ti is extremely harsh on ''diminishing return'' on performance per dollar. By cutting larger squares out of the circle, the amount of waste material increases rapidly.

 

Then there is the issue of impurities in the manufacturing process. Parts of the silicon wafer is simply not of acceptable quality. This is the reason for

1. Why Nvidia and AMD can overclock. They have to set a standard for what is acceptable, and will guarantee certain specifications. If you can overclock, lucky you, if not, it was not guaranteed in the first place.

2. Why AMD and Nvidia sells two different cards with the same chip. The GM204 chip is used in the 980, but if the quality of the chip is not up to standard for 980 specifications, it is compared to the 970 specifications. If it passes the 970 specifications, the chip will be sold as such. The massive 520mm^2 580 chip was sold as: 580, 570 and 560Ti 448 core.

 

Key point here, the larger the chips on the Wafer. The higher percentage of the chips are gonna be defect.

 

 

You're not gonna see a 1000USD or less 600mm^2 chip anytime soon. Not this year, and i seriously doubt next year. The P100 is allegedly releasing 1Q2017, and i wouldn't be surprised if it costs as much as 5000USD, if not even more. Nvidia is gonna be lucky if they even get 50% of the chips on the wafer.

 

For now, the flagship card is gonna be somewhere between 300 to 350mm^2, and you're gonna have to wait for HBM2. What you're getting in 2-3 months is the 370, 380, 950 and the 960 replacements. Late 2016 / early 2017 you're gonna see the 390, 390x, 970 and the 980 replacement using HBM2.

Big Pascal is generally considered all the binned versions of GP100... this will mean requirement for HBM2 memory availability, and as such the general consensus is that it will only really happen Q1 2017.

Nvidia hasn't said anything yet about the release for the Pascal cards. We could interpret the P100 news as suggesting we wont see big Pascal until next year some time or it could just mean that they have limited stocks of that format in servers planned and that actually the big ramp on volume is actually graphics cards and in a few months we will have a pascal card that is HBM2 and all is wonderful (and expensive presumably). We just don't know because Nvidia hasn't told us and everything else is just rumour and as I look at the history of these sorts of rumours they are almost always a long way wrong.

General consensus is that GP104/106 will launch around Computex with GDDR5 high density...

No, Drive PX2 has GP106 so it will release by the end of the year

They will most likely still use the GP106 for entry level GTX 1050 and 1060 cards...

Yeah... We will get the 950 and 960 replacements this year. Just a guess.

 

BUT WORRY NOT!!! Nvidia will work their Voodoo magic, and the GTX 1060 will be a Titan X killer!!!

haha i will just probably buy 2 or 3 980 ti when the new pascal come out if there is a price drop
