Split between 2 builds

FreddyHunt

I am making myself a gaming PC and I've came up with 2 builds. One has a gtx 980 w/0 SSD and the other has a 390x and a 120gb SSD + I have a FreeSync monitor.

My question is if the gtx 980 better performance overweights R9 390x with an SSD and a FreeSync monitor.

Yeah I had a FreeSync monitor for 6 months now, so I guess R9 390x is the answer then.

Can you wait another few weeks/month/whatever, and "afford" the extra $50-$100 for a proper SSD?  (480-512gb seems to be the sweet spot these days!)

Current-model 120gb SSDs have such few R/W channels internally these days that their performance is pretty awful.

from my experience currently 240 is the "minimum" sweet spot, beyond that you pretty much pay more to get more storage as you'd expect.

Thing is I will be using SSD for Windows and some basic programs (Office, Photoshop,...) so I don't really need a higher capacity SSD

That's basically all I run on my Windows 10 laptop, and I'm already at ~130gb used.   I store all the videos, pictures, letters, etc., on my server.  And running a SSD chronically near-full isn't the best thing in the world either for performance or longevity.

then the 390x `-`

just add a few bucks more and you'll double the capacity

its worth it imo

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I'm not sure I quite understand you by saying "double the capacity" xD

the 120gb ssd is like $50-ish, the the 240gb ssd are like $70-ish

so its like 50% of the amount and you get 100% the capacity

Agree with @Moonzy , 240Gb is best bang for buck right now if you don't need any extra capacity above that for storage that needs quick access. It is definitely worth the extra $10-$20 to get another 120GB of space if you can afford it... but if your budet is really tight  and you know for sure you will only use approx upto 70GB of that 120GB SSD then save the $'s and put it towards something else that you DO need.
