Motherboard dead? (experts only please)

Cyanfrost

Hi there!

I have been working on pcs for a long time but i have never ever ran into something like this.

So recently my friend did a restart and he had a black screen for 10m he turned it off and it didnt boot anymore

- I was like "lol u prob unpluged something cause the fans would start spinning"

But when i went to his place he wasnt lying, it didnt turn on only a GREEN light was on , on the motherboard and one spot on it got really hot (wtf?) but no fans started to spin.

- I took the parts gpu, cpu, psu and tested them : the psu was kinda dodgy but it worked after second boot , cpu totally ok , gpu working aswell .

But if it has power why wont it turn on ?(atleast the fans should)

And how did it randomly die and what?

And even using the shortage tehnique it wont boot ....

So did the motherboard die?... how can i test anything .

Will awnser every single question cause i cant crack this issue

edit:

970 100m aniv editon

i7 4970k

cx750m

some ram 8gb

this is the motherboard https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z170-A/  << gets hot on the plate that says asus

edit 2 :

So after doing a cmos it stiil doesnt boot and the green light stays on ... so can the mobo be dead cause every other part works ...? Like i dont want to buy a new mobo yet cause it was expensive .. And is there any point in trying a diffrent cpu?

Well if the light is on on the motherboard it shouldn't be dead, unless he broke a chip or resister off it, but idk if the light still comes on if that happens

Test the components individually. Does the motherboard have any led lights or an error code readout you could look up in the manual?

I would

1. reset the cmos

2. If the CMOS reset doesn't work check all the cables; possibly unplug and replug all of em (including peripheral stuff)

3. Since you have a working PC and if you are willing to do this swap out each of his components one by one to try to figure it out.

A few questions:

What are his PC specs?

Does it turn on at all? Lights? Fans? Anything?

Also forgot: Try plugging in headphones or speakers to the mobo since if has problems it might be outputting error codes through the audio.

What motherboard is it exactly? and what power supply?

Did anything in the system change recently?

Also make sure its not the power supply - if its sketchy this may very be the issue. If you had trouble testing it in another system this could definitely be the issue.

Then I would reset the CMOS on the motherboard if you haven't already.

Next I would attempt to run it only with one stick of ram at time if there are multiple.

Failing that I would presume its dead.

From what spot? Cause if it's like VRMs or something that would be normal.

That's probably the chipset then. As long as it isn't super duper hot that's totally normal.

It shouldn't be any different from any other modern mobo.

PSU that doesn't start immediately is a dodgy PSU - it's not a car that starts at the nth turn of they key
