So with the recent fire in China and all that I decided I wanted to buy some ram in advance of the rest of the system I will be building somewhere in the next 3 months. The cheapest DDR3 2x4 8GB 1600mhz cl9 memory I could find was Kingston HyperX (not with a color suffix). Is this ram known to cause problems and is it compatible with a lot of mobo's?

I had some problems with bad Kingston HyperX Blu RAM in the past, however I think that it was just bad luck.

The Kingston Hyper X Blu 8 GB (2x4GB Modules) 1600MHz and also the Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 1600 are great value priced RAM. Kingston and Crucial both make quality products.

If you are thinking of making a Intel build (either Ivy-bridge or Haswell), MAKE SURE to use RAM rated at 1.5V. If you get a 1.6V or 1.65V kit (like 50% of Kingston's memory kits are), you can fry / damage the Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) within the CPU. (This information was even included in Intel's CPU datasheets)

I know a few people who ran 4 sticks of 1.65V memory and that did permanently damaged to the IMC. From then on, they could only run 2 sticks of RAM in their system.

For AMD chips, it's a similar situation, but they are slightly more flexible...but still, 1.5V RAM is recommended.

EDIT:

Yep, for Haswell CPUs...page 18 and page 81 of the "Desktop 4th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor Family: Datasheet, Vol. 1"

Ivy-Bridge CPUs....page 12, page 23, page 65, page 86 of the "Desktop 3rd Gen Intel® Core™ Processor Family: Datasheet, Vol. 1"

okay, ordered them, should arrive tomorrow. Will try them in my present system, 4GB ram isn't cutting it with a lot of apps open.

Kingston HyperX series usually advertise their XMP profile settings so if you wanted the advertised speeds you would have to enable the XMP profile.
