$8,000 CAD Computer Budget

Hi all,

So last night at the dinner table I was talking computers with my dad and he told me that his work is giving him an $8,000 (CAD) budget for a computer upgrade. Right now, he's using a very crappy iMac and since he has free reign on what kind of computer he buys, I can design/build his new PC for him.

I'm pretty excited since building an $8,000 PC is pretty freaking cool but I'm quite undecided on how to go about the computer for him. He's a studio director that games in his free time but for work shoots, edits, and produces videos and podcasts for a rather large company (well no duh with an $8k budget!). I'll attack a PC Part Picker link I've been playing around with but nothing is final except we'll probably stick with the X99 chipset. Thanks guys!!

I looked into doing a custom water loop last night but it would cost going from 2 GPUs to 1, and for that little of a performance buff compared to losing a Titan X, I decided not to. I also have never done a custom loop and don't really feel comfortable having my dad's work computer being my first experience with custom water cooling.

Go crazy and get whatever other stuff you want, still a lot of room left in this build where you could get another 16TB's of storage, more CPU cores and another GPU / 4k monitor.

Well video editing depends on the computer and the software, and since you can get a better PC for the price and my dad hates Final Cut Pro, so it's kind of a no to Apple for this one.

@jorenc, this build makes a lot more sense for an editing rig. It boasts a 5K monitor with a 7ms latency, 2 980 Tis instead of two Titan Xs (yes, they’re still a waste of money), one less HDD, a faster SSD, more RAM and larger RAM modules (why go smaller?), and Windows 10 Pro because Home is for pussies. /s

Being someone who's editing 4k RAW footage with 128GB's of RAM I can say that it never even used like 30 lol. This was a 2013 Mac Pro with the dual fire pro D800's and a Eight core Xeon.

Wow. You lucky person with a lucky dad. I would go for more of a 'workstation' kinda build as opposed to a kinda 'gamery' build like you specced.

  • A 10 core would be nice
  • the x99a is basically the x99 deluxe/pro without wifi
  • I really, really hate closed loop AIOs. Get a good air cooler, a custom loop or a enthusiast grade AIO.
  • A more serious quiet case would be good
  • The storage was good
  • one Titan is fine. Even a 980ti might be good but in some applications 12gb of vram might be nice
  • Dominator platinum is a waste
  • The PC 3000 fans are super loud. Normal nfa14 fans are ok
  • The on series of monitors at4k would be good I think or a workstation
  • I included some good peripherals for a work environment (the blues might be too loud for an office so look at the Browns)

@LinusTech has demonstrated that, on PCs, Premiere (and presumably other editing/rendering software) can easily eat up to 64GiB of RAM. Macs probably function differently, and @jorenc already said that his dad wan’t interested in Macs anyway.

Don’t listen to him, seriously. It’s paramount to spend this kind of cash properly, and it would be very unwise to “go all out” and “get what’s cool.” Even if your dad doesn’t use the build you finalize, you can impress him and also those he shares it with by creating a proper workstation.

So would be a Xeon be better then? I don't have that much experience with Xeons I just know that they're significantly more expensive than the Core series. And since my dad likes to game as well (yes even at work) I thought going with a Core processor would be a good middle ground and it would allow for more GPU power.

i edited my dream build slightly to fit into this budget

its black and red themed, i recommend running the two 5tb wd blacks and 850 pros in raid 1 seperately for redundancy if your dad is working on important files that cant afford being lost

4k monitor for his editing purposes, i removed the PG348Q for best imersive gaming experience as that would make this build go over 9k CAD lol

and the motherboard does fit in the case, just that you cant use the conventional cable routing holes on the sides

EKWB, with their experience in the custom cooling scene, is a good pick.

A EKWB Predator 360 is a good pick. You can also get a prefilled GPU blocks that fit in with the quick disconnect system.

I still ill reccomend the NHD15 though

No, not really. There are Xeons which equate to the 5960X but lack some of the features of it, and those Xeons that match it cost more. So it’s not really cost effective, and to be honest the 5960X is plenty for an editing rig – your dad will only see marginal differences between it and a Xeon.

As far as editing goes, Xeons in rendering are usually reserved for rendering farms.

That's what I originally thought, thank you for clearing that up for me!!

I looked at that AIO last night, and I was almost sold with it, but then I read where they mention that it's a super thick radiator plus it has fans, and I didn't know any cases off the top of my head that could fit it in. I even had a hard time fitting my X61 into my H440 with the Z170 sabertooth mark 1. Do you know any cases where this would work?

One additional note: If your dad can wait until June, he can get a better $1,400 CPU out of the new Broadwell-E series. I would advise waiting until then if that’s at all possible. Talk to him about it :)

That sounds perfect, actually. I think he mentioned it happening probably at the end of the summer, which I'm guessing the end/start of a quarter for his work. Will Intel make a new chipset for it or will it still be X99?

It should work with the fractal define r5 I reccomended at the top or front. Why do you feel that watercooling is a better option over air cooling. The nhd15 would offer a quieter and more reliable experience as well as a cheaper price tag. It would offer similar preformance to a cooling loop. If you got the Xeon it would offer the same preformance. If you get an i7 you might be able to squeeze a bit more of an overclock but I don't reckon it is worth it.
