4790K or 6700K?

Im in the process of building a PC and was wondering whether I should get a Haswell i7-4790K or the newer Skylake i7-6700K. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I say the 4790k, you could get some for a bit cheaper than a 6700k off eBay or hardware swap.

I've seen some people (not just cpuboss) say that the 4790k performs equal to if not better than the 6700k. http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-6700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4790K

You know how it is, the cow goes "moo", the dog goes "woof" and the gamer goes "The PvP is unbalanced."

if money dosen't matter just go for the 6700k the z170 boards look so much sexier than z97

If you live near a Micro Center like me, I'd go Z97. I got my Z97S SLI Krait for $100, and my 4790k for $270.

Separate they're $110 and $280, but you get a $20 discount if you buy a Z-chipset motherboard with a k-SKU CPU.

I used to be quite active here.

Go with the 6700K, the price difference can be minimal and you get some features like better m.2 compatibility, more usb 3.1 ports etc.

I was going to say the 6700k as well but then I realized the two people with 6700k's are recommending them and the people with 4790k's are recommending those so it's based off of person preference. If you're willing to spend the extra then 6700k but if you want the best bang for your buck then the 4790k

That is true but I only had to make the same choice 3 months ago and realised that RAM and mobo prices are pretty similar + z97 boards are becoming more scarce.

So you may as well go with the feature and choice the z170 chipset gives you. Realistically, there is no more or less performance difference in the 2 processors than could be found in 2 different chips of a Q6600. Mine will crash at 4.6ghz for example, others have managed to run stable at 4.7ghz that is still a negligible difference in the grand scheme of things.

Very true since yours can't reach 4.6ghz but I got mine to 4.9ghz stable. With cpu's its like a lottery.

You could go with a 5820k as its similarly priced to the 6700k.

Well they used to say there is a 10% difference between 2 intel cpu gens, that is just not the case in the haswell skylake case, however, there are difgferences in the chipsets e.g. more m.2 lanes, usb 3.1, nvme support, DDR4 etc. So if the price difference is at 30-40usd, why go for z97? You are paying for a top mainstream chip so I will assume that the extra money is not that much of an issue given the features available...

@jcw150 yes but motherboards and 4 channel ram usually aren't... If you don't need the xtra pcie lanes and 2 extra cores then there is no need for it.

Yeah the features for the price is also a really good point when discussing a $30-$40USD difference :)
