Yeah and once support is there for other drive installs you're going to have to delete your installed games. I have an ssd as a c drive. I have no idea how they didn't think it would be an issue. But by the time the majority of users have their rifts it shouldn't be an issue as it seems like it could be another 2 weeks before I get mine, I ordered probably 10 mins after the preorder showed up.

Wait, you HAVE to use the Oculus Store? Couldn't you just use it as a "generic VR Headset" (not really, but you get the idea), and play the game thru Steam?

For steam games, unless they use a platform like Rift does, you could technically use a generic VR headset and play steam games. If you buy a Rift, you have to use the Rift platform. So not only can you not play with people on Steam, you have to hope that the game you want to play is on the Rift platform. Apparently, there are some more nefarious things hidden is the Rift's ToS.

It just makes sense. Oculus has had devkits in the wild for a lot longer, and are focusing more on conservative seated experiences that don't require as big leaps of innovation as room scale does. Unless Valve go full Half-Life 3, the launch lineup should be more polished on the Rift. But to be fair, the launch lineup isn't that important in the long run.

You are spreading misinformation when the OP is about cross-platform multiplayer, not whether non-Oculus Store games can run on the Rift. Which they absolutely can. Fuck, there are even Youtube videos of the Steam version of Project Cars running on an Oculus Rift.

And it seems you cant read. I said that was my interpretation and if I interpreted wrong, correct me. I responded to one guy based on my interpretation and you call it spreadinh misinformation. Spreading misinformation is knowing the truth and purposely misleading people.

No, you don't have to use the Rift with the Oculus Store. It's just a lot of FUD going around for some reason.

Just more excited for the Rift games tbh, Technolust, Adr1ft, Chronos and air mech command all look great. I'm sure oculus will have some great games. Luckys tale looks great. Hoping that there won't be exclusives for a specific VR headset but that's happening sadly. I'm sure that oculus have said that they would open up their store to rival headsets, don't know what's stopping them(that could be misinformation as it's been a while since I've heard about that.) the Rift does do roomscale, need to wait really before we judge oculus touch games, however dead and buried looks good, hover junkers is coming too which looks great. I'm going to get my games from steam where I can, but I imagine im going to spend most of my time with virtual desktop.

The devs choose steamworks for a reason. They is a larger audience because they are tied to one thing

Steamworks is not a requirement for Steam. There is no particular "audience" for Steamworks matchmaking itself.

I think the majority of devs will move over to it as restricting yourself to a single headset is stupid. Most of the early rift games are only rift games either because they were too far through development or theyve got a deal with oculus.

This issue is down to Valve, not Facebook:

Who would want to "kill Oculus Home?" Valve/Steam.

 

Project Cars multiplayer runs on Steamworks. Steamworks is one of Valve's services, (subsidized servers and all my friends in one list!) that is actually a very smart way for Valve to continue their dominance (some might say monopoly) of the PC gaming market.

 

Once a dev signs on for Steamworks (for servers, other games like The Division, integrate with Steamworks but use their own servers) that's it, their multiplayer is now in the hands of Steam. Even if Oculus wanted (which I am sure they would), there is no way that Valve is going to let a copy of a game bought and launched from a completely different store access Steamworks for servers and social (friends lists).

Even if they did allow it, they would require all those users sign up with Steam accounts driving yet more users to their store, and forcing anyone (Oculus in this case) to drive their customers directly into the hands of their competitor, and a behemoth in the PC market.

While i I fully agree with software, The VR headsets are limited stick (Clearly more limited than they even realised seeing as how all our preorders have been pushed back) The tech wasn't an unknown. It had been tested and shown off by multiple respected channels. I still don't really see this as an issue as if you want to be able to play against friends on steam, just buy the steam version instead.

Them choosing steamworks was the right option because steamVR would work on either headset iirc.

 

The fact that the oculus home version doesn't work on vive or with steam users is on oculus for not implementing something like steamVR and for insisting on starting their own platform. And then the devs for not using steamVR and making a version that doesnt support steamworks.

 

One works on anything, one doesn't.

 

Just want to point out that competition is good, but a hardware maker having their own platform is never a good thing and leads to shit like this and the console wars.

First of all, Vive will work with oculus home. Oculus have already stated that they will allow other headsets to work with it. 

 

Why shouldn't a company have the choice to have their own servers? It's not good for everyone to have to rely on just one company. That's called a monopoly. We have laws specifically to prevent it. 

 

So officially vive and rift both work with each other's platforms. The issue is Steams servers can't talk to Home's servers. This isn't either of their faults, it's just one of those things. Devs could have made their own servers and still sold on both stores, but they haven't. So the lack of cross play is down to individual devs, not the platforms.

I see there's some misunderstanding on how/what SteamWorks does for MP games

SteamWork's match making is just a layer between the store client, in this case STEAM, and game's servers - it just helps with matchmaking, that's it

it doesn't mean Project Cars on STEAM is hosted by ValvE's servers! so, there's no reason for a Rift version and a Vive version to not connect to the same server, except for deals the developers had to make with the respective platform owners

here's one other thing about Oculus Store titles, they exclusively use Oculus SDK - there's little to no chance in hell that FB will allow ValvE' OpenVR/SteaVR SDK games on their store front 

Samsung's GearVR works on Oculus SDK, that's why it has access to Oculus Store

 

no matter what Palmer or FB say, doesn't mean it will happen - as it stands now, FB have started a VR platform war, and they will lose

Uh that isn't entirely true?

 

We don't know the reason why the Steam / Oculus Home version don't connect, so say that its because there is some form of deal is misleading.

The assumption is that the Steam layer can't communicate with the Oculus Home layer.

So yes, whilst it true there is no reason they can't both connect to the same sever, its down to the developers to construct their own intermediary between Oculus/Steam so that the 2 can communicate properly.

 

To provide a bit better example than Rocket League, Radial G is a VR game on Oculus Home and Steam, it can communicate between Oculus Home players and Steam players, whilst the Steam side is done with Steamworks.

 

I doubt this is a deal between platform owners. The devs simply haven't made it so the 2 can communicate.
