Steam download speeds

So the problem that persists is the fact that I have an HDD and an SSD, as most people do. But trying to download massive 40 gb games like JC3 is terrible, capping out at about 12 mb/s. I was downloading on the HDD before, but canceled and deleted the downloaded data, and tried downloading on the SSD. Still the same. I have 10 gb/s internet, so what gives?

You have 10gb/s internet? Sure, show me a Speedtest result and I'll help you further.

And how is 40gb massive if you have "10gb/s internet" ?

http://speedtest.net

He probably means 10mb/s haha

Okay, so apparently I DON'T have 10 gb/s internet, weird. Checked it last week and it was working just fine.

Would mean you have a connection faster than Google Fiber.

I would be happy capping out at 12 mb/s, I get 2mb/s and that's it. I live in a city and love nor money can get me any faster because im "Direct exchanged serviced" they say

My point, whether or not I am wrong about the speeds, is that networking shouldn't be the issue here.

Could you run a speedtest and show us the results?

Depending on your connection, the network may well be the issue. What are the download speeds for other applications? Tried Origin?

Depends what's available in your area. I'm not too well versed on US ISPs.

You could give your current ISP a call and see if they can offer you a better plan/connection. Other option is to go on price comparison sites and find out what's available in your area. Bear in mind that most ISPs will advertise "up to" speeds, which is basically just a way of saying that you're not certain to get those speeds. You may find you're just physically limited to 12Mbps with the line in you have right now.

First thing I would try is restarting your router and modem. If it doesn't improve, then call your ISP and check what's going on.

The hard drive has nothing to do with it... 12mb/s is too low to even make the slowest of hard drives struggle. I'd say you're just limited by the servers you are downloading from, I mean you can't expect them to always offer full bandwidth to everyone..

Edit: On the other hand, 12mb/s sounds like you got a 100mbit internet connection and are maxing it out without problems. What exactly are you complaining about? It doesn't get better than that in like 99% of the planet.

8Mb = 1MB.

Thus you 11.74Mb download speed means your download speed is equal to 1,43375MB/s (Steam shows download speed in Megabyte (MB) while speedtest.net default shows it in Megabit (Mb))

Ouch. I struggle to deal with 5Mbps when I visit my dad.

I'm jealous of the WiFi upload speed I have where I am now. I want it at home too.

That's not the issue here. He seems aware that he's getting 12Mbps, he just doesn't know why he's getting 12Mbps. He said he got 80Mbps a few weeks ago, so in his first post he likely meant something along the lines of 100Mbps.

12mb/s is not maxing out a 100Mbps connection. 12MB/s would, but that's not what he's getting. He's getting 12Mbps (12Mb/s), which would be an issue on a 100Mbps connection.

Which is really a great speed compared to the rest of the world, I think OP is just upset at the current state of the internet and the size of today's games, and somehow figured its the hard drive to blame, lol.
