So as the title suggests, I regularly suffer from stuttery gameplay and poor frametimes with my 8320 @ 4.0GHz/1.325v and r9 270x. I can push the 8320 to 4.4GHz stable, but at 1.43v, giving 54C under gaming load. Not ideal when I also need to 3d render, where the heat can't be managed at all. I've OC'd the 270x a bit to 1100 at +20% power limit. The CPU is also bottlenecking even this weak card in Far Cry 4 and GTA V (yes I know GTA is quite CPU intensive). I can run at 4.4GHz on the CPU, but its not ideal and doesn't entirely fix the issue, and I'm switching to an e5 2670 in about a week anyway so I don't want to burn anything out when I need to sell my board and CPU.

Any suggestions? More CPU voltage maybe? Update something?

all drivers updated? BIOS updated? Full Specs?

Specs are in my sig. I'll try a BIOS update, although I think its the latest version anyway.

4,4 ghz is pretty much the max you can get out of tht CPU. maybe u can squeeze 200 more mhz but not worth it. also you need a good cooler like corsair H100 or similar to keep it cool below 55.

Yeah my board is also pretty av when it comes to overclocking. 4.2 is pretty safe and easy, but it still stutters hard.

Oh come on, you have a 270x. Are you sure it's not that?

Nah its running at like 80% sometimes. It can run the games just fine at 45-60fps medium-high, but stutters a lot at 4.0GHz, and less at higher clock speeds.

It may not be that but OP didnt said on what resolution and settings he plays so it may as well be the cause here.

My friend rocks Athlon 860k + R9 380 and he runs games just fine and smooth on high settings (Witcher 3 and such).

1080p, GTA V, Far Cry 3/4 (4 runs better somehow), and that's about all. Only medium-high settings and 45-60FPS. At higher clock speeds its smoother, but often the 270x is bottlenecked down to 80% usage.

Hmmm BIOS update hasn't gone well. When the machine is turned on, it refuses to POST and I get the DRAM LED on. If I hit memo ok I can get into the BIOS, but nowhere from there...

looks like...you now have a VERY good reason to upgrade then :)

if you can get into your bios just reset the default configuration and attempt to boot...or reset the CMOS.

because people do not believe those old ass AMD FX chips limit the performance of current modern GPU's...i see them paired with r9 390/390X a lot and it shouldnt be :) i had one and i had issues with it's performance as well.

If you can OC them they do well, when mine is at 4.5GHz its really smooth, but hot and unstable. I got it because I 3d render a lot for work, so I need the core count more than single core performance. I literally have my new Xenon just sitting on my desk waiting for its new motherboard to finally arrive.. So close.

i had mine running at 4.6ghz with a GTX 780 and while it was fine for many if not most games, there were always some games in which the poor single-threaded performance of the chip would affect my gaming experience and the GPU was not maxed out...it was ''alright'' but not optimal.

Yup, its perfectly okay but even when it bottlenecks my card in certain games, it still won't hit above 70% usage. Bit of a shame, its really good for the work I do and a good price. But an 8 core Xeon for $75USD.. Can't wait. Its at a lower clock speed, but has a pretty big IPC improvement so shouldn't be an issue.

Try check CPU clock speed while gaming. Probably mainboard VRM heating up and throttle the CPU.

8320 won't bottleneck a 7870 at that clockspeed imo.

The clockspeed stays pretty solid, its not a huge issue as I'm ditching it soon. Just got to wait for shipping -_- its been over 3 weeks now..
