Ability to change profile background and/or colour scheme of entire website

It's not possible. If you want to customise the design, you're going to have to make a user style.

I was talking about simple colour swaps of the base orange that everyone's used to to your own personal style

Maybe just swapping the top photo on the forum to make the LTT logo other colour choices that are limited to some coloured squares and changing button colours are not possible? How so?

It is not possible because the CSS files which define all of the colours and background images are, and have to be, the same for all users. If you want to change things, you are welcome to use a user style to tweak the site to your liking.

The colours that are used were chosen because they reflect the Linus Tech Tips brand.

If I wanted to make a theme, would there be possibility to change button colours?

there are some chrome addons that let you change the color/theme of websites. idk if they work on every site or certain ones but it's worth a shot
