European researchers want to send snake robots to Mars

Wow, some pretty cool ideas. I mean the Snake design has been in nature for millennia, no reason why it would not work. The fact that the design could combine with other rover designs and ensure that the same thing as happened to Spirit is great. Potentially they could free Spirit which would double the terrain to be covered, although in fairness I dont remember the specifics of how Spirit got stuck tbh so not sure if that is feasible.

no, Europe does not have a Space Program because we have KSP, and Europe isnt a country, that might help too.

as an engineer, this does not sound too applicable but we will have to wait to see what happens to space exploration by 2020.

Europe has a Space Programm called ESA also almost everything the NASA does is with ESA.

And Snake Robots already excist in diffrent Sizes so it would already work today.

And there are some that can change form to a Wheel or split in a half.
