Firmware is kind of like a low-level software. It's not the physical hardware, though. 

It's essentially a bit of software that is embedded into a bit of hardware, which basically tells the hardware what actions to perform. It is essential in order for the hardware to operate correctly (or at all). 

The BIOS is a type of firmware. Things like home appliances and traffic lights have embedded firmware that provides instructions for the hardware.
