First Build Opinions/Recommendations/Feedback

snortings

Hi,

This is my first time building a Gaming Desktop.

  • I have a budget of about $1800.
  • This desktop will be used for Web Browsing, Heavy Gaming and some occasional video rendering. Would like to run most games on High/Ultra (Such as GTA V). I will be gaming in 1080p.
  • I will be using 1 Monitor (1080p).
  • Still need speakers, but I can use a headset for now.
  • I want to upgrade from my current school laptop due to its lack of gaming performance & overall slowness of the system.
  • I am wanting to overclock the i5-6660K to about 4.6GHz.
  • Do I need any extra fans in the case etc?
  • Currency - $AUD

I have heard that MSI is a very good brand, and I love the look of their Mobo's and GPUs. I have also heard and seen (from LTT YT Channel) that the Cooler Master Mastercase Pro 5 is a very good case.

You should change out your motherboard. The B150 series cannot overclock CPUs K series CPUs. What you're looking for is a Z170 mobo.

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

If I were you, I'd get 16 GB of ram for the extra video editing power. Otherwise, with that spec list, you should find yourself with solid 60+FPS in 1080p performance on all your games.

Also from what Ive learned you don't need to spend the extra cash on a gold certified psu. Bronze is good!

Thanks! But I think I will stick with the 8GB as I'll be making videos like every 2 months.

Can they physically not overclock cpus, or they are bad at it?

Nvidia Vs AMD really depends on whether your monitor supports Freesync or G-sync

Not by a lot. If I remember correctly there was a fellow on this website who had a whole graph on this watt usage and the results were quite daming. You don't need gold.

You could easily upgrade your display to 1440p, though 24" is a bit small

otherwise overclocking isn't going to be worth it for 60hz gaming.

EDIT*
For your budget, or a bit over anyways, you could get a 290 with a 1440p 144hz IPS Free-sync display

so ya, get the beastly display over anything else man

Get the gtx 980 gigabyte at newegg. You were going to spend money on a ride on for 509 anyways right? Nvidia cards have more power and generally out preform amd cards. Don't get me wrong amd cards out preform Nvidia sometime too but not always.

But what about those people who game alot or leave their pc on all the time that can draw alot of watts.

Aside from the 950 and 980ti, the AMD cards are going to be faster and save you money on a Free-sync Vs G-sync display, plus Nvidia's current cards don't appear to be liking DX12.

Well I'm assuming he won't be leaving them on all the time lol but I guess for those people they may wanna jump for it. Psu are a very subjective thing that depends on builds. I personally don't believe putting in the extra cash isn't worth it.

Because any intel quad core at 3+ghz is going to do 60fps in modern games and all the extra money spend to get a solid OC is better spent elsewhere, like a better display, like a way better display
