Because any intel quad core at 3+ghz is going to do 60fps in modern games and all the extra money spend to get a solid OC is better spent elsewhere, like a better display, like a way better display

Mk. Well what would the benefits be of overclocking for everyday use?

Like web browsing? nothing, possibly emulation, but otherwise, still better off spending that money in other places for most cases.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Okay.

If I go into a Z170 Mobo for overclocking, it costs wayyyy too much. Recommendations?

It's in my build motherboard has USB 3.1, and you have to get a Z chipset motherboard to overclock anyways

980 excels here though

I agree but the 980 is going to be better if the OP said he was gonna be doing heavy gameplay. The OP said he was gonna spend 509 on a GPU right? The 980 is the best choice for 500$

This is a reference card, imagine a gigabyte 980 with three fans? I dream of being able to own a sweet 980 like that.

Except that if you get an adaptive sync display the GPU instantly costs at minimum $100 more

and he only has a 1080p display, so a 980 or a Fury is complete overkill, a display upgrade is going to be about the best thing

and those benchmark numbers there are a bit strange, the Fury should have 0 chance in The Witcher 3 with hair works on, and Jayz in this test, saw 120fps in Metro LL, also why is there like an almost 30fps gap for Metro in Joker's video?

GTAV as well, 100fps in jayz's video, 980 still ahead though, that game really likes nvidia cards

Do you need a monitor, or do you already have one?

Are you fixed on getting the 390, or would you consider something Nvidia?

Any particular colour scheme, or do you not care about how it looks?

I do not have a monitor, am still looking for one. I like the thin bezel ones.

Well, everywhere I have been told that the 390 is a good video card. Unless you can change my mind :P I like the 8GB though.

I would like a Red and Black scheme if possible.

I dont really like the design of the Tomahawk aswell. Just looks, weird... Also the case makes me cringe xD

Remember I am AUD not USD ;) It converts to about $749 AUD for a GTX 980 in Australia.

Also from what Ive learned you don't need to spend the extra cash on a gold certified psu. Bronze is good!

Depends on where you live, for me after 6 years running the system 10 hours a day a gold psu would had earned itself back. And thats assuming prices dont change, the trend has been power is getting more expensive even when adjusting for inflation. So for me its worth it.

Get a better/cheaper motherboard with Z170 chipset, something like this.

You can get 16GB of ram for extra $30.

$195 for CoolerMaster case? You can buy much better case for less money.

You dont need 750W.

Motherboard: MSI H110M Pro-VD Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($99.00 @ CPL Online)

Would like to keep it an ATX build with a Z170A chipset (so I can overclock).

I dont like the design's of the GSkill. I like the design of the Fury's. Everywhere I look says that Dual Channel is better than a single stick.

I have heard alot of bad things about SeaSonic for gaming.

Not too sure if I want to outlay $769 on a monitor.

As I said earlier overclocking isn't going to be worth it if you have an i7 6700

Aesthetics are pointless to worry about, Dual Channel can help a tiny bit in CPU bound situations, but getting a single stick now makes upgrading to 16gbs later easier

the 290 is going to perform around the level of a 390 for $100 less, and my build gets you a way better display than a single 1080p display. How is spending a lot of money on your display any different than spending a lot of money on your GPU? Other than your display lasting longer than a high end GPU

I have been told my countless people (not on here) that I should choose EVGA over SeaSonic any day when it comes down to gaming. Why would you swap EVGA for SeaSonic?

It's hundereds of dollars for around 10% more performance, not worth it

a PSU is going to have zero effect on how your PC performs in games, aside from crappy ones making your PC explode, seasonic, XFX, and Superflower are generally pretty solid PSU manufacturers.

It's only $26AUD extra for the K.

I didnt mean that the PSU would affect gaming performance sorry. I meant like I heard that SeaSonic was a crappy brand.

+ the cost of the Z chipset motherboard, + the cost of a decent aftermarket cooler. for the i5 6600K

Where as if you saved money on all of that, you could easily afford an i7 6700, which is going to help you a lot more than an i5 running at around 4.5ghz

I have no idea where you heard that seasonic was a poor brand

here's 5 random seasonic PSU reviews from Jonnyguru, all of which score 9+ / 10, Jonnyguru being a PSU focused review site
