Buying gpu for my first build, looking for input

ZEBuckeye81

Looking too buy a gpu for my first build, I've pretty well decided on 970 GTX for efficiency and budget reasons.

Two I'm currently looking at, on sale at Newegg are:

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 970 4GB G1 GAMING OC EDITION
http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E168141...

EVGA GeForce GTX 970 04G-P4-3975-KR 4GB SSC GAMING w/ACX 2.0+
http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E168144...

Both are right about $300, which is honestly the most I want to spend on a gpu. The EVGA comes with Division game code, which is neither here nor there, frankly I would possibly sell the code.

My build is a i5-6600k on a Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 mobo, running 8gb DDR4 3200 GSkill

Open to other suggestions as well, I'm not biased red or green, however I do have more appeal for an efficient card, and within budget

390´s tend to be cheaper, so there´s the budget part down. What exactly do you mean by efficiency? Temps? Power Draw?

perhaps you can check out the R9 390, it performs better than the 970 in games and its slightly cheaper too, the only drawback is it lacks nvidia's features and it consumes slightly more power

so if you're very concerned about power, or wants nvidia's features, i suppose you can get the GTX 970, or else, i'll strongly suggest the R9 390

I agree with the 390 but they do spit out alot of heat though. A 970 doesn't as much.

Both. Yeah, the 390s are comparable, depending on the card. Some are higher, and some of the lower end cards are less. When spending that much I'm ok with paying for quality.

Frankly the performance of the 390 on some benchmarks is slightly higher but not substantial, while requiring more power. I should have bought a higher wattage psu, but honestly I got a good deal on a 550 G2, and when I first started into this build anticipated going with a sub $200 card.

Um, 550 is more than enough for a 390. And have you seen the early DX12 benchmarks? 390 be stompen. And you can usually find the powercolor or the xfx 390 for $300 and under, and those are solid, so no real worries on quality.

Even with overclocking cpu and gpu? I want some head space, not be pushing the limits of anything

But that´s what overclocking is, pushing the limits. But seriously, should be more than adequate for a mild oc.

Yea, but the R9 390 produces more heat. It doesn't matter much if a certain cooler can dissipate more heat when the concern is which produces more heat in general.

Also what games does OP play and plan on playing? I know some games are plainly NVIDIA biased and others AMD biased. Overwatch is NVIDIA biased, Far Cry Primal is AMD biased, etc.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.
