Hey everybody! I am currently finishing picking parts for my first build. I just had a few questions before I order my parts for my first build. I hope I can get some opinions.

1. Can I build the build on a carpet? My apartment has no wooden floors, just carpet and I don't want to damage my components due to static. I am deciding between a gaming desktop vs gaming notebook. I have picked all my parts for the gaming desktop, but that is my main concern.

2. Do you think I should invest in an anti-static mat (http://www.frozencpu.com/products/19542/pad-310/ModRight_Xtreme_Super_Large_Anti-Static_Mod-Mat_Work_and_Assembly_Surface_Over_47_x_23_in_Size_-_Patent_Pending.html)? I have an anti-static wrist band but I don't know if that will be enough.

3. What OS should I choose for my build? I am deciding between Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 8 Pro. Those two are the current skus I'm looking at. I have used all the Windows OS in the past and I don't know if I should upgrade now to w8 or stay with W7 (I'm currenly using Windows 7 Home Premium on my gaming laptop).

4. Are mechanical keyboards worth the price? What switch is good for me (I mainly will play FPS games and will be using microsoft word to type up projects, but prefer a quiet typing experiences)? Sure I look into membrane keys? I am currently looking at the Logitech G710+ or Logitech G19s? What are the advantages/disadvantages of these keyboards? Which do you prefer?

5. Can I game using my Vizio 32" HDTV (1080p/60hz)? Using my current tv would save me money on a monitor/speakers.

1. Yes, you could make it on a table

2. No, just touch something medal every few minutes or so

3. What do you want?

4. Go and test them in a local computer store to see if you like them. You will usually type faster on them and are much more pleasing to type on. I prefer mechanical

5. Yes

2-)no

3-)get the win8

4-) @Samdb has lots of mechanical keyboards and he loves em so i think he can explain this one

5-)yes but it wont be a pleasant experience while you are just sitting 20cm front of it

Carpet will do or even a bed if there is literally no wood or tile floorings. I would use a anti static strap.

Windows 8 is going to give you more support and better gaming so go with that,

Its fine to use a tv as a monitor. It isn't the greatest but meh.

1. Don't place the components on the carpet, make sure you are building on a desk or something, but if you ground yourself at the start (before unboxing stuff) and don't rub your feet, you will not build up a static charge. Please make sure you are grounding yourself regularly. Alternatively you can purchase a grounding strap for very cheap.

2. (answered it above really, I don't think a mat will be necessary, unless you do not have a surface like a desk to build on)

3. Go for whatever OS you like. I went for a leap and made the switch to Windows 8, got Classic start and haven't regretted it thus far.

4. Mechanical keyboards are nice yes, but you can do everything on them that you can do on a membrane. I would say get a cheap membrane then make the upgrade when that either breaks or you feel it's getting old.

5. Yes

1: Of course you can. It is just not recommended though.

2: You can never be too safe.

3: Generally, newer OS is recommended because it will have more support most of the time.

4: Personal preference. Go try them out at a store.

5: You can game on any monitor.

I like the color scheme of Noctua fans. Deal with it. Forget about the bad memories of the past.

1) But kitchens and bathrooms never have carpeted floor so... Do it in that, if it isn't too dirty. Desks too.

2) If you have the money, go for it.

3) Only seen Win 8 at a friend's 'cause I personally use Win 7. Your choice.

4) Never made the jump, listen to the people before me.

Why would you need Windows Ultimate or Pro? If you don't have any reason to, Home premium will most likely be the same for you.

Try different keys out first and get one you like. They keys are different and you shouldn't gamble on one if you don't have to.

Where can I go to check out the different keys? Do places like best buy allow trying out different keyboards before purchasing? Do they even stock mechanical keyboards?

Some walk in stores have keyboards you can try.. You could also order a $15 cooler master sample with each key so you could figure out what you like. The sample comes with a $15 gift code that you can use towards a cooler master keyboard so it is potentially effectively free.

Thanx. I bought a sample kit off ebay. Comes with browns, black, red, and blue. Hopefully I can try it out this weekend.

Just put the CPU and RAM into the board on the box it came with and then put it into the case. You don't need a mod mat. Just use the anti-static strap. Windows 8 Pro with the Start plugin is great. Mechanical keyboards will last you at least 5x longer and typing feels so much beter on them. You can game on a TV, but as others said it isn't the best in the world. How does your build look like by the way? Can you post it here or you allready have a topic?

I will post it here soon. I'm still finishing up the configuration lol.  Also, I'm waiting for the mechanical switch testing kit to come so I can make a decision on the keyboard. Should be done with the configuration by the end of the week. I will post my final specs.

I'm really digging the brown switches.  I tried all of the switches already...It looks like the browns are a pick for me :)

Same here--need help on picking a keyboard or are you set?

AFAIK Corsair K70 has a brown switch variant. Have you finished with your build BTW? You can post it here so we can take a look and fix some things, so you get a better system.

I was thinking about going for the Logitech 710+ (since they do have brown switches). If you can recommend another one I will probably go with that.

Thanx for the suggestion I will look into that.  I'm just looking for a case and I should be all done (I'm in grad school right now and I'm busy with tests and all so that is why its taking me so long to finish the build :(). I'm looking into either the HAF X or the Corsair 750d (it hear rumors going around that something is going on with the case on 9/24). I'm going to wait and see how the Corsair 750d turns out. I saw a video Logan posted on youtube going over the Corsair 750d and really intrigued me.  Too bad the video was taken down not too long afterwards.  Any recommendation for cases?

750D should definitely hit my sweetspot too :).  Just post the rest of your build and I'll look into that.

I have the G710+ myself--gorgeous keyboard.

I'd recommend picking the case along with the rest of the parts as a whole when planning your build.

It'd be good if you read this: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-reccomendations-please-read-before-posting/
