Hi,

I'm installing my stock cooler on the cpu and I had to readjust, basically take it off and put it back on as it wasn't lined up. I'm wondering if I need to clean and re apply thermal paste or if it's ok? It was the stock thermal paste and I'm wondering if I need to buy some more?

it should be fine to use it for now but you should buy some new thermal paste and replace it when you can

It is generally recommended to replace the thermal compound any time the cooler is removed. If you don't have any then it will probably be ok, just watch your temps to make sure that there aren't any problems.

You don't have to buy any yet, but when you get a chance it will give you better cooling if you do. So next time you see some in the store, I would recommend to buy some.

As this is my first pc build, I'm unfamiliar with brands of thermal paste. Any recommendations? Also I do live near a micro center

Arctic sliver is the top of the line brand of thermal interface material. But if your not doing too much gaming any brand would work well.

Also you are keeping a stock cooler so thermal compounds will make very little difference due to the lack of overclocking etc. Any good quality compound will work fine. Arctic Silver is an old standby that works fine. You can also go with the MX products, or noctua...etc. I would advise you to avoid the liquid metal products as they are difficult to apply and are only for specialized situations.  Other than that really any thermal paste should work fine with very little difference in performance.
