So apparently Minecraft is the new breeding ground for AI. First chess, then Go and now they want to steal our diamonds.

The idea is that the AI is randomly spawned into a world with no idea where it is but it's sole purpose is to climb the nearest hill.  It looks pretty cool with that the system is capable (or soon will be) of working out if it is in a cave and can figure out to avoid lava pits and rivers.  So a bit like the  AlphaGo it uses a iterative learning method to try try and try again until it works out how best to achieve it's goals.  

So I guess this is the reason they paid $2 Billion for Minecraft.

Of course in the summer this research is going open-source which for once could actually be a bad thing.  Automated griefing. Oh my!

If this is doing it by sole AI that is cool but if they are cheating as a system that knows the game can easily find the highest point and every diamond. It has to render it so it can tell exactly where it is. This will make PVP PVE harder though with AI battling you

Just keeping this here as a In my opinion, "cheating" AI is the worse. The player usually don't feel like its a fair challenge since it's not.

It's hard to say but from how they describe it being able to differentiate between the light and dark, it seems that it is analysing the screen so it should be limited to the chunks currently loaded.
