and only 1080p monitors... surely an ultrawide on its own would be better

EDIT: unless you are using this build for a simulator

The SSD is just for booting

The 1080p's are just a holdover until I can get my hands on a couple Predator X34's

sorry but its such a bad rig.... i dont see why you would wanna spend a huge amount of money on that.

I still think a large SSD would be wanted to keep the system feeling sharp and responsive.

But I'm open to constructive criticism. What would be a better 4 Way SLI rig?

What are you doing that will need this much horsepower? Also more than 2 or 3 cards is going to be a waste as the scaling is not going to allow the cards to be 100% efficient in that configuration. Also, lose the 1080p panels, one of the cards, downgrade to a 5930k, spend the money you saved on some nicer monitors and a bigger ssd.

2 way sli 980ti because

  • of problems with microstuttering at 3/4 way SLI
  • massive amounts of heat and power usage
  • money
  • no room for more expansion

Honestly you should probably be spending like $3k on a rig even for 4k/ultrawide/vr gaming. We really need to know what you're doing to make a good suggestion on hardware.

Will it be capable of running 4 VM's? LAN parties are a pretty frequent, and my gaming room is limited for space. The four of us can't pile into it with all of our rigs.

for 4 VMs you will need more than 8 cores really

if the other people have there own rigs ask them to bring their own graphics card (that's what I do with my girlfriend)

The only problem with that is that the PC will also be my personal rig, and I would really rather not take out GPU's every other weekend. Total first-world problem, but meh

Why don't you build a totally reasonable $1500 main rig, and then toss together a couple of LAN rigs using older hardware. Get a couple of 680's and 2500k's, that would be much more effective and less of a hassle to manage.

Taking out GPUs is very easy.

Here's the main issues, if you have 4 GPUs you will need one other (like in linus's video) for unraid VGA out so you will have to use a board like the one Linus used in 7 gamers.
