Hi.  Finishing out specs for a build.

 

i7 6700k, Nvidia GTX 980, Gigabyte Z170X G7 Motherboard

 

When I calculated my PSU needs, factored in a future 2nd GTX 980 for SLI.  It said I'd be maxxing out at around 630 watts, and suggested a 750W power supply.  I went with a EVGA 750 SuperNOVA G2.

 

Problem is, I'm going to need a UPS for this, so I have time to save and shut down in the event of a power outage.

I've read a lot about modern PSUs not getting along with UPS units.  I've heard that some units work, but don't know what criteria to look for.

 

And I have even less of an idea how much power I need a ups to be rated for.

750 Watt PSu means at least a 750 Watt capable UPS 

 

Like dis one supports 850 Watts roughly

You need a high quality UPS for higher end systems. The quality of the electricity can change with low end UPS not feeding enough clean electricity, sometimes not even kicking in right away in a power failure. You most likley need a 800W UPS maybe a bit more for SLI, or just 600-750 for non sli

The APC unit Arty linked there would be a excellent for that system even when adding in a second 980ti. The thing you need to make sure is the UPS has a pure or stepped approved sinewave which is what that APC unit does.

That's actually a bad choice

That is an AVR UPS not PFC

 

For modern PC power supplies you want a PFC UPS because otherwise your PC's power will be cut for a fraction of a second when power goes out, causing the PC to hard reset and restart itself

 

The PC then does not continue running, it restarts

 

OP is right, he should get a PSU that supports modern computer power supplies properly like the cyberpower active PFC series

A CyberPower Pure Sine model.  Think that'll work.  It's rated for 810 watts.  So it should be able to handle it, right?

That's what i mean, the "stepped approximation" is what causes newer PSUs to cut off for a fraction of a second when the PSU switches to battery power

 

You can look on google there are several people who have an APC PSU with a new PC and whenever the power goes out their PC resets

While I have seen it happen on lower end units that have either really badly done modified sinewaves or even some off brand squarewave ones I haven't seen too many recent issues with the APC units on modern PSU's, other than maybe a bit of extra coil noise while on battery backup.

 

I've personally used APC units myself without any issues with my systems over the years with the stepped approx system, however you would be correct since it is possible to have an issue if a specific PSU is extremely sensitive to that.
