virtual currency mining

I am currently setting up a botnet / beowulf cluster computer with tons of free computers (all awful and old) and going to mine virtual currencies with it such as bitcoin, litecoin, dogecoin, etc.

I have a little experience in doing such things but it would be nice to have suggestions for the botnet / cluster computer.

It's not worth it.  The cost of electricity to get the currency will be more than what you get from the mining.

even if you dont pay for electricity youre still going to lose money from having to buy thousands of dollars of parts and only make a few cents a month

You're still not going to be able to compete with ASIC miners. So.... still not worth it.

I would suggest not mining bitcoin or any other sha-256 coin at that. They have dedicated devices that can mine in the terrahashes where you will be lucky to get a few gigahashes with a relatively large cluster. But to be honest, crypto is a bit of a... challenge when it comes to finding out whats worth it and what isn't. Check the exchanges, mine whichever is both most cost effective and the most profitable.

What are the specs of the PCs and how many? I did a similar thing but I am folding with it rather then waste it on currency that will never amount to a penny. We had 67 old school computers with 4 core AMD Athlon X2s running 100% 24/7 we managed to get around 76MH/s. A 7950 gets about 2,000MH/s and a GTX980ti around 8,000MH/s. Giant waste of energy for mining altcoins. But you can do some pretty cool things with cluster computers. We cracked passwords in seconds even though it was slower then other GPUs. Or you can set up a webserver and what not. But if you have like 80 970s go for it
