Hi, I'm trying to install Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon, but the installer just isn't booting on my new system. It seems to load fine at first: There's a loading screen, followed by a grey screen with a flashing cursor, but then the screen goes black and nothing happens. I've tried installing from a DVD and a USB drive and it's the exact same problem. Strangely enough, it works fine on my ancient laptop,  but not my desktop. I'm using the following hardware:

Intel Core i7 5820k

ASUS X99-A USB 3.1

EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0

Is this particular OS compatible with my system?

Thanks!

My setup:

Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor

Asus X99-A/USB 3.1 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard

Cooler Master Nepton 240M 76.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory

2x Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Western Digital BLACK SERIES 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card

EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Cooler Master N400 ATX Mid Tower Case

Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer

TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter

DO NOT USE A RECENTLY DOWNLOAD LINUX MINT.

Further Explanation: A backdoor was recently installed into the Linux Mint ISO that was uploaded to their servers, to be safe I'd try and use Ubuntu.

I thought they fixed that.

There are no open source drivers for maxwell gpu's yet. You either have to install and configure your drivers with the command line(control alt f2), or use a older gpu. Any linux distro without a gui will work fine and you can get the gui to work with some work. Try debian.

Shouldn't he at least be able to use the noveau (probably butchered that name) driver to get up and running? I just had to use that at a low-res until I could get the Nvidia driver installed. This was on Ubuntu and I don't know a whole lot about Mint, so correct me if I'm wrong.

OP, can you try live booting Ubuntu? If it works, you might just want to install that once you've tried it honestly. I wouldn't feel comfortable running Mint knowing that they had a breach like that.

For a while noveau didn't work at all on maxwell cards. In kernel 3.19 it works badly. I don't think mint is running the newest kernel.
