whats better in triple monitor setup gtx titan or gtx 690

skysmad

Wow you guys get so wrapped in being right you forgot the op of the thread. Read the title guys. Op wants to know about triple monitors. So my advice was tailored to triple monitors, you know, the 1%.

Actually it's .09% according to the latest Steam Survey. But anyway I think it's best to stay away from triple monitors because support is lacking and so is hardware performance. I believe OP will be sorrily disappointing when games don't work properly and when they do half work the performance will be abysmal. That's not to say that the bezels get in the way of the action and the menus get all messed up.

It's 6gb VRAM vs. 2gb VRAM. Looks like the Titan is taking this one :)

Once again it's not about Vram it's about graphics core power and architecture. Read prior posts that have links. The Titan cannout even use 6GB Vram as it lacks the grunt to use it.

True but let's not turn off people from AMD for a feature that the resy of us don't even use.

I was answering his question. Not trying to sway anyone else at all. It was an answer specifically catered to his question and I made it clear that it was for triple monitor setup. Why are you worrying about the rest of us when we are trying to help him? If someone else started a topic asking what to get but only had a single monitor I more than likely would've directed them to an AMD card, but in this case they aren't the best solution ATM.

Some people might think that this situation is a one for all kinda o thing so we must make it clear that it a less than .1 percent kind o thing. The best solution ATM is to stay away from triple monitors. The other best solution if you must have triple monitors is to go AMD Radeon HD because driver support and game developer support is much better.

I tried to explain that to "Mr. Expert" but he doesn't listen.

Please everyone, don't take advice from people who have no clue. I actually own the cards in question. I actually am running triple monitors... and Nvidia surround works fine, i don't have game compatibility issues. Its a blast. Mr. Expert assumes an opinion on something he doesn't actually use.

I tried triple monitors on nvidia and AMD. Many games don't come with triple screen profiles and as well most games perform like crap at that high of a resolution.

Well support is a lot better now than a year or two ago but i do agree. The hardware required to run triple monitors with good settings is quite expensive. I would say using triple monitors to play games is like owning a boat. Its alot of fun but its also a hole in the water you throw money in.

I would say that even 2x Titans can't max out every game with top notch settings on 3x 1080P panels. I would rather use one ultra HQ 1080P or 1200P or 1440/1600P monitor like a Dell Ultra Sharp or Apple Cinema Display and turn up all the settings and force maximum Super Sample AA via nvidia CP.

You'd be surprised, i play crysis 3, metro last light, bf3... etc all maxed out with 60 fps. Only game that makes it struggle so far is Farcry Blooddragon.

it does before you factor in AA

Titan SLi can handle pretty much anything at the moment - but barely not enough for AA (especially MSAA)

I don't think it can handle maxed out trine whilst streaming... nothing can handle that.

@OP-

just go with CFx  dual 7970. it'll be fine.

Perhaps on Med you get 60fps min. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crysis-3-performance-benchmark-gaming,3451-7.html

Well then you are not tell the truth. TH is telling the truth 30fps min on Med settings without MSAA @ 5760x1080 for a single Titan http://www.tomshardw...ing,3451-7.html

okay Mr.Troll. You win i'm lying. I'm jealous of all the others with better systems than me and this makes me feel better about myself to lie to you.  PS: You do realize i am running two Titans right.

Getting back on topic: Between the Titan and 690, the Titan will perform better overall with triple monitors due to the larger amount of VRAM. The 690 may out perform it with games that use less than 2GB of VRAM at those resolutions. AMD has been in the triple monitor game for much longer than Nvidia, but Nvidia surround still works quite well and doesn't have the same frame rate issues that AMD does. (But AMD's next generation of cards will likely fix that)

Addmittedly, the Titan can't fully use 6GB of VRAM at stock, but with some overclocking you should be able to make decent use of the extra VRAM. With next generation consoles coming, games will likely require more VRAM to be played well at high resolutions, so the Titan is probably your best bet for now. If you can wait, it might be worth seeing what AMD does with their new cards. If they bring out a card with 6GB of VRAM that's more powerful than the Titan, then go for that.

One Titan get 30fps min on Med settings which means 2 Titian's will get just barely 60fps min on med settings if scaling is 100%. You claim Ultra Settings with 60FPS min when it's more like 8fps min on Ultra with full MSAA. Just saying.  Somehow TH is more trustworthy than you are.

It takes 2x SLI Titans or more to use 6GB Vram. No games will even address that much Vram though. An OC will never be enough to use 6GB Vram. The performance will remain the same though weather using 3GB Vram or 6.

Yes, they can't use 6GB of VRAM, but it does help. It's more like headroom so that the Titan doesn't get bogged down by VRAM limits. I have a GTX 670 that often gets slowed to 17FPS because of a lack of VRAM, but it actually has more power to give.

Actually a GTX 670 does not have the power to address more than 2GB Vram. My HD 7850 can't address more than 1Gb Vram. My 1GB HD 7850 has the exact same performance as it's 2GB HD 7850 brother.

What Mr. Expert is trying to say is you're not allowed to buy a better system then him. Its not like Linus has posted videos showing how the 3gb cards outperformed the 2gb models. Oh wait he has. The GTX 780 1440p video.
