System to run pfsense

Jackpot17

Dead link from mobile. Hardware varies with what you want to do with it. Basic firewalling for normal home broadband, yup turnip.

While that system is cheap, it would probably not make a good pfsense box. It's an old server. You can probably get the same performance from a quad core embedded cpu. Unless you dont care about the HUGE waste of energy that is used to power it, dont buy it.

My native language is C++

I would try sites like www.mitxpc.com or www.logicsupply.com, they offer a wide variety of hardware (including rackmount) that are non-proprietary. Granted, not as cheap as using spare hardware that is lying around, but definitely worth the price for small form-factor rack mount hardware.

I actually have purchased some 1U rackmount equipment to install pfSense for some clients, worked out great.

This is, IMO, the best way to run PFSense: http://www.pcengines.ch/apu.htm

Cheap, and very power efficient. Its also passively cooled and small, so you don't have to find a place to put it and worry about noise.

This is a pre-configured version of PFSense so you just install it on the mSATA drive and you are good to go: https://www.yawarra.com.au/support/operating-system-images/rident-software/
