Best networking solution for home?

Compass

Hey people,

So I'm trying to find the best software for a home network firewall etc.

Current contenders:

Pfsense

Sophos UTM

Sophos XG

OPENSense

ClearOS

I cant seem to find any documentation which says which one is the best, I like the features of Pfsense but it just seems like the web ui is from the 90's and I dont like supporting OPENSense since they blatantly ripped of pfsense and called it their own.

Thanks for da help.

I can't give you a comparison as PFSense is the only one of the bunch I have tried, but I have been very happy with it thus far. The UI is pretty dated, and its not the easiest thing in the world to configure... but once it is up and running I've never had an issue or needed to reboot in the past two years.

Best is subjective and dependent on your needs

Who cares what the GUI looks like? Does it accomplish what you need? You look at it to set it and you are done. You aren't looking at the thing everyday. More advanced functionality in many FreeBSD and Linux builds are still accessed through a command line.

Add Untangle to your list.

I have tryed most of them.

It depends on what you want !

PfSense is great, but it is  only an layer 3 packet filter. Of course you can install plugions to have IDS etc but it is not that easy an often very slow.

I would highly recomend to uste the Sophos UTM ( Home Edition is Free) !!
I run all of my Networks using this.
The main difference is, that the utm is an "Next Generation" Firewall so it is Layer 7 Apllication Defense.
Here you got IDS/IPS systems Antivirus/Antispam for Email, Antivirus Proxy for Web surfing etc !!

This will protect you much better then just the PfSense.

And weith the utm you are way more flexible. Another benfit is, that you have an professional company who bild this. So you have bug fixes and updates very fast.

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions

-- sorry for my bad english
