I know just enough to make a mess of things, so need some help trying to figure out what's going on here. I'm running pfSense on a dedicated box serving as my network's DHCP server and DNS resolver (via unbound within pfSense). I have no other DNS server addresses configured so all clients should be using the gateway as the DNS server. Looking at the network configs for various clients (both wired and wireless) this appears to the case as they are all reporting 192.168.1.1 as the DNS servers, which is the gateway address. I'm also running pfblockerng (PiHole alternative

Hi All, Altice just rolled out fiber in my area (NJ) and I have been searching for a way around using their crap ONT/Gateway AIO. From what i've read, you need to keep the provided hardware and double NAT the network.. This isn't an optimum solution for me. So here is what I am thinking. Why couldn't I terminate the fiber connection to an SFP+ port on my PFSense router LIKE THIS. I know that they wont provide alternate hardware, so why not skip it all together? Are they providing the FGW-GR240BG to customers? Are people just not doing this because they

Hey folks, I’ve been noticing that my UnRaid server is getting a tad long in the tooth in terms of speed of docker containers running and the VMs. Granted the server is running on an old FX-8320 and 16GB of DDR3 ram. So I think it’s time to upgrade but I don’t know which path to take. Currently I’ve got an order to Amazon for the following parts list...https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xcnPVc (Note that all Purchased Items will be put into the new server from the old one.) On the other hand however, I also thought that maybe a used Dell R710 like this one...C

I have FTTH 1.5Gb internet and love it. My family loves it even more as they have no lag. I would like to try my hand at managing the network with something like pfsense or UniFi Dream Machine to iron out and (maybe) filter a little internet coming in to the house as my kids are getting a little older now. The problem is I do not want to bypass the ONT as it part and parcel with the ISP router (HH3000). I tried bypassing the ONT and splitting the IPTV, setting up an EdgeRouter Lite, switches, VLANS, programming, blah, blah... it was a pain in the butt. And for the family, when I wasn't ho

Hi All, thanks in advance for any help. I am trying to setup a 10gbe PFSense server on some Supermicro hardware that I bought on eBay. I am trying to figure out if I have enough PCIe lanes for both the 10gbe NIC and a Samsung 970 evo in one of these enclosures. Any thoughts? Separately, does anyone have a good way that I would retain functionality of the front bays? I assume that when I install the 10gbe NIC, there is no way to keep the front slots active? This server doesn't seem to have any documentation from super micro which makes researching this difficult.

Hello everyone, I have a strange situation. I have a Watchguard XTM 525 flashed with pfSense. Then a CISCO 3750X switch. I have a TRUNK port going from the pfSense to 1/0/1 on the CISCO switch. VLAN 10 is unable to pass DHCP or any internet access at all. All other VLAN's seem to work and are able to communicate outside the LAN. My physical pfSense interface (LAN) has a subnet of 10.1.20.0/24. When plugging into VLAN 10 (ports 1-36) I get an IP from 10.1.20.0/24, when I should be getting 10.1.8.0/24. I will post my configs below. It's strange that all other VLAN's are working but

Hi guys I tried to figure out if it is possible to establish a vpn connection to a hotspotshield server directly from your router. Unfortunately I was not able to find a confirmation online. In detail: I am considering to use the service of hotspotshield. Due to convenience reasons I am interested in the possibility to establish the vpn connection directly from a pfSense router. To my knowledge hospotshield is using openvpn. If I could connect directly from my pfSense box by using the built in functionality, there would be no need for special software on the different clients. Doe

I know I can make a router from a older PC, I know I can make a NAS from one as well, is it possible to use middle tier componants (such as 4770k and lots more ram) to make a custom machine that pulls double duty? A mutl drive NAS AND LAN routing capabilities?

TLDR: Pardon my inexperience with PFSense and it's abilities but this is a question I have to ask. Is it possible for my PFSense box I'm building to utilize a PCIe modem card (dial-up) for the incoming DSL lines? I'm basically replacing my Century-link supplied modem-wireless-switch combo unit with repurposed server hardware as it has been getting flaky and its web-UI is rendered practically useless. I'm suppose to have a 20 mbps connection but I can only ever seem to get a 1.2 mbps download speed. (My connection consists of 2, paired DSL connections. I live out in the boonies so..that is

Hi, At the moment I have following network setup in our home/SOHO. Internet subscription of 1000Mbps down and 50Mbps up. A virtualized pfSense on VMWare ESXI 7.0 (Host Spec: HP SFF8200 with I5-2500 en 8GB ram) and a TP link Deco X60 wireless solution with 3 units. I use them with an internet backhaul. I bought the TP link Deco X60 in the end of may as replacement of my router and acces point setup at the moment. The installation was kinda easy because there weren't any settings to configure. I got fantastic wireless speeds. My house consists of t

Network upgrade (pfsense router + switches) to support VLANs and need confirmation before hardware purchases. For more details on what I am trying to do see below. Would it be possible for me to use my existing Asus RT-AC66U router as an AP for multiple VLANs? If question 1 is no, then would I be able to use this Ubiquiti AP to have a wifi SSID for each VLAN? I want to have 10GbE connnection between my main PC (add-in NIC) and my server (built in NIC) and have those be the only connections to the network as well for both. I plan to get this Netgear switc

Dear forum, I'm back in search of wisdom. I'm encountering multiple problems in my current LAN setup, and while I have a couple of suspects, everything tells me I should be getting better results or worse results, but not the exact results I get. It makes no sense to me at this point. Let me preface with two things: 1) I know there are many ways to connect two computers, so having "a" connection could be achieved by trying a different configuration and see how it goes. However, the goal here is to get this layout to work, or alternatively, understanding why it can't (as in, sh

So I decided to upgrade from Google Wifi(Router) to pfSense for better understanding of my network and also to muck around. *I am nowhere near great with networking so I need some help. Before i installed pfSense i had Pi-Hole running on a Pi3. It was working flawlessly and now it seems that all the dns request/lookups are being blocked, as well as updating the block lists. First off I messed around with my Lan interface in PF to see if i could find the issue with no avail. Then I flashed the Pi3 and tried to do a fresh install, well it looks like PF is also blocking that ins

I've recently put together a pfsense router, repurposing a Fujitsu Primergy something something server. It's a Bulldozer-era Opteron server with some DDR3 RAM, an SSD, and an add-on 4-port gigabit NIC. Before PFsense, this PC did nothing for months, and before that it ran Windows Server 2012 R2 I believe, non-stop for 6 months or whatever the trial period was (probably more, since it doesn't shut down automatically when the trial expires ). No issues. Some 10 days ago, I installed PFsense on it: other than next-next-next, set WAN port, set LAN port, set the remaining ports, I did n

I am upgrading my network to look like something in the image ive attached. However, will i be able to use the existing AP's ive circled to provide wifi access to users on the guest VLAN network as well as for users on the LAN? - assuming that the AP's are capable of VLAN's. thanks

Hello, I have two internet connections with a monthly quota of 500 GB and I am planning to setup a PFsense load balancer using these two connections. When the monthly Quota of the connection ends, the ISP throttle the connection to 64Kbps making it unusable. The problem that I'm facing is, if i setup a load balancer using these 2 connections with Pfsense and if one of the connections run out of its monthly data package, the users assigned with this connection would get terrible speeds. I would like to know if there's a feature in Pfsense to assign users after checking if the connection speed i

Title sums it up. I have an Optiplex 9010 with 60GB SSD, I'm looking to run Linux Mint on it and on top of that have PfSense and pie hole running. Is this possible? I'm having a really hard time with SSH, installation period and trying to figure out if this even works. I'm above average on computer skills but this is my first time working with networking aside from just plugging in basic routers and cables etc. Does anyone have any good suggestions/links/tutorials on how to set this up and configure it? I really appreciate any help i can get.

soo.... it's one of those "me" topics again.. i'm looking for a firewall / router software that'll allow remote users to connect to a VPN, which will grant them access to the stuff i host on my server, as an alternative for port forwarding (and passwords, whitelists, and all the other garbage that brings..), sort of a DIY hamachi alternative that isnt terrible. in other words, i want something i can throw in a VM on my server, that does the following: - user needs to connect trough windows' built in VPN (NO exceptions here, end users are dum users) - all conne

I am rather new to all of this so I am hoping someone out there can give me a hand. I have purchased an SMCGS-50P managed switch. I have a flat that I want to isolate from the rest of my house network and so using pfsense I created a vlan for the flat in PFSense. I went to my switch and selected the ports that are in the flat and put them on their own vlan ID matching the ID number I assigned in PFSense. I enabled DHCP in PFSense for that vlan and gave it a range. I created a firewall rule in PFSense to allow any traffic to the internet but blocked it from my lan. My i

Hey fellas I am hoping someone here can help me out. I have an old HP 7800p with: Core2Quad 6600 8gb Ram 120GB SSD 1TB HDD 1 Pci-e Gigabit Ethernet adapter I have tired many times to install PFSense and have watched many videos on youtube showing installation however my issue seems hard to find in searches. When I newly install it is PFSense is telling me I have two interfaces, re0 and em0, em0 is the built in jack and re0 is the pci-e card. When I go through the setup pfsense does not give me a lan ip at the end both the lan and the

Hello, im in need of setting up a solution for managing network bandwidth and assign quota for multiple devices/users. I have a monthly data cap in my ISP and i want to split it equally between me and my dad's devices. He's got a phone and a laptop and i have got a phone and a laptop (4 devices). Both of us atm connect to the wireless ISP router through WiFi. The ISP router doesnt have these features to limit bandwidth and to put quotas, so Im thinking of setting up a software based firewall in between the ISP router and devices to have these bandwidth and data quota limiters for each user. so

Hello and Merry Christmas. I want to setup a solution using PFSense for splitting my internet quota between me and my dad. We got a 90gb connection and I want to split this among 4 devices (My phone, my laptop. dads phone, dads laptop). Thats about 22.5gb for each device per month and when a device had used up all the data assigned to it I want to stop it from being able to get online. I want this restriction to be applied during peak hours only (8AM till Midnight). For offpeak hours I would like to allow the devices to use only 10gb of data and when a devices uses that up, I want it to stop g

Hello, I'm in need of setting up my USB wireless interface for my pfsense running in Virtual box and so far I have tried the usual way of bridging the adapter to the VM. This however gets detected as a wired interface by pfsense and i dont want it that way. I need it as a wireless interface. So far I have tried adding the interface as a USB device, but it doesnt get detected by pfsense when i tried to assign it. What other options do I have to achieve my need? Im also open to trying out different VM software if it has the necessary features to do this. Thanks.
