Do you agree on this Office PC?

Hi everyone,

I have to build an office machine and came up with this. Unless there is a significant fuck-up with one of my parts - please don't change the whole system.

Do you think the i3 can handle the job? Do you think this would make a reasonable workstation?

I'd go with an Adata SP550, a cheaper case, and a cheaper motherboard but other than that, it looks good. For general use an i3 is MORE than enough. What exactly will the system be used for?

When I think of an Office PC (One of my specialties) I think of Microsoft Excel / LibreOffice Calc.

You're gonna want a faster CPU for that.

How is an i3 not fast enough for general office use (multiple excel sheets/word documents/chrome tabs)....I've seen offices easily run off of C2D without any issues.

Ever seen a A-Z * 1200 Excel sheet filled with nothing but numbers, words, and algorithm? It can be quite taxing.

i had that one in mind but if you look at the intel ark i dont see much of a difference.

http://ark.intel.com/de/compare/88185,90729

the dual core has hyperthreading and a faster clock speed.

and there wont be excel sheets that big. mainly light office work and surfing the web.

hyperthreading =/= equal performance.

Also, there are quite a few differences that vote for the i5.

There is cheaper RAM, but not because of the speed.

http://dellrefurbished.com/product/systems/desktops/cat61198/dell-optiplex-990-2gb-ram-250gb-hdd/si6816683

use code slickdeal50p, i bought this system a few weeks ago and added a few addons,  i have pics and info on what i did with this system

http://slickdeals.net/f/8522627-dell-refurbished-store-50-additional-off-storewide-free-shipping?page=4#commentsBox

my post is #60

thats if you want to get a used system. its $170 +tax if you qualify for free shipping. its a decent gaming system with what i put into it , im sure it would be a good office pc without the add-ons, for 430 you could buy 2 and upgrade the ram

i know you didnt want to change your system but this could save you some cash and you dont have to buy a OS

if i post a link to amazon try to use the LTT affiliate code to help the channel http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&tag=linustechtips-20

  • 2 weeks later...

we bought the setup as mentioned. it was kind of hard to put together because the manual for the case is a fucking nightmare. for real. you dont know which screw goes where. im still amazed that i didnt trash the motherboard - especially since i used one wrong screw. and to get it out was felt like defusing a bomb.

the manual for the motherboard is not of a fancy kind either. it's my second pc i built, so i would have like to have some more hints and tipps like what goes where, how to, etcblabla.

one thing I noticed: the boxed intel i3 cooler is insanely loud. and it runs at 2200rpm to achieve like 48°C under 25% workload (svchost.exe is updating win7 right now - so no temps for idle).

is this normal? it's annoying. we have an i5 4590 back home with a stock cooler and this one isnt that loud. is there a difference between boxed coolers for i3s and i5s? maybe too little thermal paste? (i had to wipe the pre-applied off because i touched it by accident).

we already have the system up and running.

i was pushing it more because of my last questions regarding the boxed cooler.
