Which Card?

Looking at upgrading my GPU. What card is higher performance? GTX 960 or GTX 770? If I do get either of these cards, They must have either 2 6 pin power connectors or 1 8 pin connector.

The 770 will get better performance but use alot more power.

770 is more powerful but I'd urge you go for a R9 380 - slightly more power than a 770 but MUCH more power efficient.

^ Assuming you have a higher end cpu. Low end cpu don't even bother trying an AMD graphics card... seriously...

Lower end CPUs don't play nice with anything above a 750 Ti really - driver draw calls or not, a low-end CPU will be an issue if the game taxes it

It plays light years better with Maxwell than it does with AMD cards... Digital foundry snuck a comparison into one of their more recent videos (I honestly can't seem to find it, dammit DF for not making a separate video) but the jist was that while the 380 was definitely better with the i7, it had massively worse stutter and lag than the 960 with the lower end cpus.

Yeah, not sure how that would factor in with twin Xeons though. Bit of a wildcard.

single core performance is going to be awful. so yea... I'd say 960 at that point. Although with DX12 games it's more than likely Tonga would beat the shit out of GM206.

Depends, the benchmarks for Ashes look the same as DX11 titles and Hitman is a joke. But, if I was getting a 380/960 I'd get the 380 so as to have better performance when I upgraded the CPU. Personal preference though, the 960 would still be a good choice.

That's not what I meant... I meant once you move to an API that doesn't drill the core 0 thread as hard as DX11 does, the cpu bottleneck should alleviate itself quite a bit (a relative help to the 380), plus everything we know about DX12 for Maxwell indicates that drivers are going to have to be really on par for them (exact opposite for AMD) to keep up which imho is indicative of actually increasing cpu overhead load (which is collaborated in part with early indications of AoS working poorly on Nvidia card with low clock speed cpu's).

 

Now combine that with Tonga's much superior hardware and I think GM206 doesn't stand any chance of keeping up (personally).

Nope, I was agreeing with you. Simply sharing my disappointment with how DX12 has been implemented to date.

Me, I'd get the 380. You "maybe" will see issues with some current or older titles. But titles on the horizon should run better on the 380. Big "should" though.

In your budget try to get R9 380x or R9 380 it beats GTX 960

Considering an 8350 performs around double of those Xeons, being on par with a 3570K is not possible.

As @don_svetlio is trying to say, the issue is that your single threaded performance with dual (old) xeons at only 3 GHz is not going to be very good, and ironically that is a huge factor for current gaming (specifically min fps). 

 

Which isn't to say you can't get a good experience but a known issue with AMD driver overhead means that for your cpu system it is quite probable a 960 would be a much more enjoyable experience.
