I might check on the intel 750 booting properly. The intel and samsung both run off of nvme which I heard that X99 is hit or miss with booting from them. I could be wrong but its definitely something that should be checked on.

I think truthfully I will stick with the z170 board and the 6700k anyway.

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110 94.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI Z170A GAMING M5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory
Storage: Intel 750 Series 400GB PCI-E Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital Blue 5TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+ Video Card

Skylake i7 -- GTX 980ti -- PCI-E SSD: New Build

Parts:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-6700k
  • CPU COOLER: Corsair H110
  • MOTHERBOARD: MSI Z170 SLI Plus
  • MEMORY: Corsair Dominator Platinum 4x8GB DDR4-2166 MHz
  • STORAGE: Intel 750 Series 400GB PCI-E Solid State Drive
  • STORAGE: Western Digital Blue 5TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Drive
  • VIDEO CARD: EVGA GeForce GTX 980ti 6GB Superclocked+ ACX 2.0
  • CASE: Phanteks Enthoo Pro
  • PSU: Corsair AX760

Designed to be a general all around power house build, with future proofing in mind. The aim was for ultra fast read speed for gaming and be able to do a range of CPU intensive tasks. The option is there in the future to add another 980ti in a two-way SLI configuration. Feedback appreciated!

What's the budget? I'd go for a 5820k if you have futureproof & CPU intensive tasks in mind. I'd also change a few stuff.

Any reason for the intel ssd? Something like the Samsung 950 pro works just as well but the 512gb is only 300 bucks.

Happy to change that - what bulk storage would you suggest?

Whats the read write speed? The 950 is clocking 2700mb/s reads and 1500mb/s writes. I could have sworn the benchmarks where around the same for the intel 750

It's the same, but an M.2 port. Pain in the ass to mount on an ATX board surely?

Also consider upgrading to the Gaming M series from MSI. The killer LAN makes a huge difference as it has a dedicated processor doing the lan work instead of using the cpu to do it. I ended up picking a gaming M5 because of this and because its slightly better for overclocking and has slots for 2 of those fancy 950 pros.

The board you have comes with a slot it takes one screw and done.

I've never mounted anything to m.2, but does it just stick out perpendicular to the case?

I've had experience with greens and 2 of them failed in less than a year, maybe they are better now...my go to hard drives are blues (7200rpms, i.e. whatever upto 1tb blues) or blacks as I don't really need a hard drive having a capacity more than 1-2TB. I don't actually know what bulk storage drives I would suggest :P

CPU has 2 more cores, and overclocked will get a big performance increase over the 6700k. Will also help for future DirectX 12 games which will be allowing the usage of more cores.

Changed AIO cooler.

Changed memory to suit personal preference.

Changed the HDD & SSD: Samsung 950 Pro's have extremely similar read/write speeds for a better price. Changed HDD for more reliability.

Added a second 980 Ti since it fit the budget.

Changed case.

Changed PSU too. The PSU is something you shouldn't go cheap on (the PSU you chose is good, but for 2 980 Ti's I don't really think so).

Let me revise and say 2.5k, need a monitor and stuff. As I said, will be sticking with the 6700k. An AX760 is more than enough for any SLI stuff. Will probably stick with the Intel 750 to be truthful although I can see why the 950 is suggested. Case is staying since I like it. The cooler is staying because the performance is essentially the same.

I agree, however I'd go for 4x8GB instead of 2x16 for Quad-Channel memory too (cheaper and higher speeds, I don't believe you'll ever go over 8x8GB)

Why do you want to stick to the 6700k? The 5820k is better, about the same price (+/- a few dollars), and gives you more to upgrade to than the 6700k.

The whole point of the build is to have crazy fast solid state storage, so the SSD is a no go. Sticking with the 6700k because reasons! I am also going with the 2666MHz RAM in a quad, because it's.. better? I am amenable to the WD Black though..!

Because I was being lazy and didn't want to research it right now. But alright, I will go and do some digging now.

I believe Z170 doesn't support Quad Channel memory, so you won't notice a difference with that.
