Nope. MS support is the only way to go.

Gday folks!

I am in a bit of a pickle. I got a new PC and sold my old one. I wiped the HDD and I still have the Windows 8.1 pro CD and key. The only problem is, when I go to install that exact copy of windows on my new PC, it won't activate. What do I do. I really can't afford a new copy of windows right now. Anything that could solve this? Thanks for the help!

Try phone activation, it usually works... open up a command prompt and type in "slui 4" and the follow the instructions on screen. --- ohh and then upgrade to Windows 10! :D

If you have an OEM System Builder license (that is the OEM license you buy from the computer store, that costs less than the retail box version), then the license is locked to the system once installed, and is non-transferable. New Motherboard -> New License.

If you have the OEM license, the only time Microsoft will do an exception, is the computer you fix for your client that you sold to the system, the motherboard is broken and no longer available. Now, via phone support, Microsoft will activate your license.
