4790k or 6700k

Skylake offers very limited real-world gains over Haswell, and this is no exception. Furthermore, the i7 6700k is obscenely overpriced right now at about $400 and LGA 1151 motherboards tend to be far more expensive. Unless you're building a high-end content creation or editing workstation, there aren't many benefits of DDR4 either.

All in all, for the gamer, I'd definitely recommend getting the i7 4790k over the i7 6700k.

If you already have ddr3 ram get the 4790k. In a new system though 6700k is better.

EDIT: Also Amazon has some good bundles http://www.amazon.com/dp/B012M8LXQW/?tag=pcpapi-20

For example if you add in a motherboard from Asus you can usually get the 6700k for more around 380.

So i was going to get a new cpu. I'm interested in the 4790k and 6700k, now i wanna know which one is better can you guys help me?

They are both very good chips. I personally have the 6700K and think it is better due to its support of DDR4 RAM. Futureproof wise, it is going to get you further into the future than the 4790k. ALSO, the new skylake processors are much cooler, as they draw less power.

do you care more about speed of cpu or ram?

oddly enough, the 4790k is a bit ahead in real world speeds and such

5775C is actually faster than a 6700K since it has that ultra fast L4 cache

..5% better IPC but 50% less cores/threads?! hell nahh...this cost the same and will destroy the 6700K...especially in the long run!..especially if you overclock it to match the 6700K clock speed which is fairly easy to do:

The only reason the 4790K is ahead in some benchmarks is due to the 6700K being released on a new chipset so the devs haven't had a chance to fine-tune their software yet. But yes for all practical purposes the 6700K and 4790K perform basically the same.

that makes a lot of sense, actually

6700k also has higher clock speeds.

X99 mobos also cost more.

That is a good mobo deal though.

However most games right now benefit more from more single thread performance than more cores.

EDIT: Should not that with DX 12 and Vulkan coming games should be able to leverage more cores better. Just something to note.

A lot of that was because of the firmware issues with the FCLK, which mobo manufactures had to set at 800 mhz instead of 1 ghz. A lot of bios updates have fixed that, and gaming benchmarks should show real numbers now.

Right now:

If you have ddr3 ram already 4790k. Otherwise 6700k.

For the next 5 years:

5820k plus mobo nanosuits mentioned might be a good deal. Depends on how quickly DX12 and Vulkan come to games though, and if you play older titles or want to play the new titles

However, DX12 and Vulkan seem mainly to show the most benefits when paired with lower end CPUs. Therefore 6700k might be better since you will notice benefits now but might not later on.
