Which CPU with my GPU?

Vizenre

Hello,

So I am thinking about getting 1 or 2 gtx 970's and I would like to know which am3+ CPU would be the best if I have 1 and which would be the best if I had 2. So the CPU doesn't bottleneck my GPU. I have a fx 6300 with a gtx 760 right now and I would like to upgrade. :)

Thanks in advance.

You will need to say if you will get 1 or 2 cause if 2 you need to go intel

CPU: Intel I5 4690K | GPU: Asus R9 280x | PSU: Evga 600w | RAM:8GB DDR3 | HDD: WD 1TB | HDD: WD 500GB | SSD: Sandisk 120GB

What intel do you recommend with 2? The new skylake i7? And I would need a new motherboard, which one would be good enough?

AM3+ is old and does not perform well in games, even the fx-9590 would limit the performance of a single GTX 970 in many games.

Go for the 970. I had a FX6300 @4.6GHz and a GTX 970 SSC. It played almost all my games at 60fps or higher

Yes, I already decided I would upgrade my videocard to gtx 970 already ordered. I just wanted to know what CPU would run smoothly together with my videocard.

Your FX 6300 won't hold a single GTX 970 back at all if you overclock it, and if you want to play at 1080p, a single GTX 970 is more than enough. Just make sure you disable gimmicks like HairWorks and you'll max stuff out at 60FPS at 1080p.

Yes that is clear to me, the fx 6300 is my current CPU together with my gtx 760. But since I bought a 970 I would like to know which CPU would be good with this videocard.

For me HairWorks worked fine @60fps. Just mess around with graphics settings and overclock! :D

You didn't read my comment properly. I said the FX-6300 will be okay even with the GTX 970 if you overclock it. CPUs and GPUs don't come glued together- you can use your FX 6300 with something besides your 760.

Sorry didn't read the back behind gtx 970 :P. And with 2x gtx 970? Would I need like a fx 9590 or which one?

If you go that high in the FX chips you'll need a motherboard that can support the FX-9XXX CPUs

Plus I wouldn't go that route just because those chips take extreme cooling to get reasonable temps

First of all, don't get GTX 970s in SLI. Get a single 980 or 980 Ti instead.

Also, when we're talking about that kind of performance, AMD chips simply won't cut it anymore with their low IPC. You're better off with an i5 6500 on the LGA 1151 platform or a Xeon E3 1231 V3 on the LGA 1150 platform at the least.

So I should sell the 970's?

Or the 6700k. Just depends on what your needs are

You already have two GTX 970s? Oh boy.

When did you buy them? I'd advise returning them if you can. Not to mention, you STILL haven't told us what resolution you're playing games at. If it's 1080p there's no need for a second GTX 970 or anything better. A GTX 970 is just fine for 1080p.

but don't sell them and get a 980 they aren't worth the extra price compared to the 970

1440p on one 970 is ok but you can't max all the settings (some aren't relevant as others)

Yeah, definitely sell the 970s for a 980 Ti. If they're still new and packed, you can probably just exchange them if you know the retailer and ask nicely.
