you will be able to set the monitor to display 1080p,but if you do the pixel density will be much lower than what it was originally ment to be.

Basically,no you won't have any problems but the image won't look as sharp if you put it at 1080p

On games just set your resolution to 1080p and enjoy an ace 4k user experience. However, I've found that playing games in a lower resolution can make the game feel blow out of proportion. and that's only on a 1440p monitor. I'd recommend if possible going to a store and seeing what its like viewing 1080p games on a 4k monitor/TV.

so, is it better to just get a 1080p monitor instead?

If you arent taking advantage of 4k then getting 4k is pointless

Why not look into a nice 1440p monitor, a 970 can run 1440p quite well in most games and its sharper than 1080p

or a nice 144hz 1080p monitor etc

its hard to say

I dont know your budget or locations

A good place to start is go on pcpartpicker monitors and just arrange by 1440p and see what fits into your budget

TFTcentral is great for reviews

Personally I love my AOC Q2770PQU, I think 27" 1440p is perfect!

Dell also make some nice monitors as do BenQ , also Asus and Acer

 Hey Guys,

I'm currently using a 1440p 27" screen (with a GTX 970). I bought the screen about 1 1/2 years ago because my old one (24", 1080p) broke and 4K was too expensive at that time.

So, the unfortunate thing about this screen is that its resolution is

  1. a little too high to play all desired games in 60 fps glory (10% of time)
  2. too low for what I would like to have for productivity (80%) and entertainment (10%)

When I set my 1440p screen at 1080p in games the image is very blurry - everything but enjoyable. Which doesn't surprise me as the scaling is like 1.333 screen pixels per image pixel.

As 4K got a lot more affordable I thought about getting a 4K screen. The 970 wouldn't be able to output 60 fps in the games I play, so there would be the option to set games at 1080p. That would mean that every image pixel is displayed by 4 screen pixels.

I guess it is still not as sharp as 1080p content on a native 1080p screen, but how bad is it actually?

Thanks for your help! :-)

It depends on the monitor, different monitors use different scaling algorithms which result in more or less blurriness..

Well, that ammount of money for GPUs is way out of my range. :(xD

Also, as the computer is only ~10% for gaming, I wouldn't probably spend so much money on a gaming factor even if I had the money.

@Glenwing: Thanks for the advice :)

Is there a way to tell what kind of scaling a monitor uses when I look out for one?
