I OC'd my 2700K to 5GHz and temperatures on all 4 cores never go past 75C, max reading was 75C and average is 65C. It has been like this for the past 2 weeks. I can play the following CPU bound titles for 5-8 hours straight and never crash

Witcher 3

GTA V

Fallout 4

 

However when I try Prime95 or AIDA64 stress test I crash within the span of 2-3 hours which I assume 8 threads on 100% consistently is not stable, which would never happen on any game that I know of.

 

Still counts as "stable"?

Hmm I see, I've been doing this for about 2 weeks now and it seems pretty stable for idle and gaming. But I'll see results for 4.8-4.9.

Not going to call it stable after a puny 8 hours that aren't even spent stress testing.

Stress testing pushes the hardware to the absolute maximum. If it's stable after a 24h full load, THEN you can call it stable

Even after 2 weeks? I've never crashed with 5GHz for idle/gaming.

Stable has an absolute meaning... sometimes. 

 

Here's the thing you have to ask yourself. Are you willing to risk a crash after a long session of gaming.

 

Another good question is how much difference is there between 5 and 4.9 or 4.8. If its a 2 or 3 fps difference does it matter?

 

You typically arent pushing you hardware to the max ever if you are just gaming so you may never experience a crash but technically its not stable... depending on how you define stable.

I'd probably tone down to 4.8 just for safety measurement if there's ever a time for some unknown reason all 8 threads spike to 100% and crash the system due to 5GHz. I have not done a game benchmark between 4.8 and 5.0 but that would be interesting to see how much % in minimum/average FPS differences there are probably not even 3% at the very least.

Honestly, past a certain point, having a higher OC makes no difference to performance in general things and games

 

Id dial it back in favour of lower temps

I'd say nay.... Turn it down a bit, just to be safe.

Stress test would really push your CPU, if it's not stable then just turn it down.

If you know that when you're stress testing your CPU it crashes then you can't just call it stable, even when gaming it's more stable.

but temps are high, what's the voltage at?

 

If you want longevity, then tone is down a bit. Sometimes the difference between 100 mhz can be like .05v (especially at the higher echelon - where the curve for v/clock is exponentially growing), which isn't worth it IMO.

Well,  technically,  if it crashes under any type of load,  then it isn't atable.

If your overclock causes a crash, then the overclock is not stable. That's what stable means.
