Hi guys.
I've had my 6700k for a while now and wanted to just run it in for a little before overclocking it.

I first tried a fairly modest OC of 4.4GHz thinking that wouldn't need much more voltage. It needed alot. I have manual voltage set to 1.39 to even boot into windows and when I do I see max temps of around 80 degrees which just seems extortionate. I'm using the H100i Cooler in an Air 540.

Idele temps aren't bad never going above 30 max.
When Stressing using Aida 64 though the temps soar. I have tried pressing down my h100i to see if it's bad fitment but there is no change in temp.

Thanks.

See my Build here!

Ok, that's far worse than my 4790K which only needs 1.35V to do 4.8GHz, and its cooled by a Seidon 120V (which admittedly struggled the last time I had the 4790K at that speed-although I have remounted the water block so it should be better).

Unfortunately some one always has to end up with the worst k series CPU, and from what I can tell yours has to be one of the worst for overclocking (which is kind of a rip off when you think about it, I know that locked Skylake i7 can overclock higher with less voltage, and that's with BCLK overclocking.

I've got half a mind to RMA it. It's a £300 CPU and with the money I invested to ensure I could overclock it to get such a small OC. It is terrible.

Better than no overclock, but still, if you do try to RMA it you'll need a good reason not related to overclocking.

Usually,  i dont agree with people who rma bad overclockers,  but considering the price of of skylake and how terrible that chip is,  i would do it.  Just make sure you give them a valid reason.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Yeah I'd normally just put it down to bad luck. But Even at stock clocks on auto the voltage was unacceptably high around 1.3v

Yeah, the silicon lottery definitely does exist. However, if these chips are manufactured specifically for custom builders like us, produced with overclocking in mind, and cost more than a 6-core, then you'd think Intel would make some effort to maintain decent quality control.

I wouldn't worry to much about it. 4.8 Ghz vs. 4.4 GHz in games is practically Zero difference. Even rendering won't see a huge improvement. A 6700K @ 4.4Ghz is a beast of a CPU - You're set for a while.

5820K - ASUS X99-A - 16GB Corsair LPX - HD 7970 GHz - Qnix 1440p @ 96Hz - Waiting for Polaris/Pascal

Whats the Voltage you need for 4.3 Ghz? Or 4.2?

ir 4.3 needs 1.28 Volt, then 4.4 makes no sense, as it's past the "Sweet Spot".

Maybe... It's also something with your Bios version. Is it the newest one? If not, try to flash one of the last Bios versions, do a  cmos clear, etc. Maybe it works much better.

I gotta agree there, the 6700k is so ridiculously overpriced right now I would never begrudge someone sending one back if he can't cool it with an H100i at a lousy 4.4 GHz.
