Hello,

I am looking to run a simple server with 5 players or so with me not playing on the computer. Can I run it with the following specs? Also I will be using 50-60 or so mods.

SPECS:

CPU: AMD 6300 (Can't be overclocked with mobo)

RAM: 8GB (All the information I can get at the moment)

HDD: 1TB (Again all the information I can get at the moment)

INTERNET INFORMATION:

Download: 60MBPS

Upload: 4MBPS

Ping: 22MS

It will be running a forge server.

Don't put too many mods on it :) that'll be the biggest performance hit. If it becomes too much of an issue check your RAM usage and pings of people connecting. If both of those are fine I'd get a better CPU.

hell yeah man it does. i had no GUP and hosted a server once i got a GPU it made it less laggy

It doesn't require a GPU, unless you will also be gaming on the machine

Hm, interesting. It's been a while since I've ever worked with Minecraft but years ago when I worked with a server hosting company none of our racks used GPUs and they ran fine.

I'm sorry to say but having a GPU or not makes no difference whatsoever. I would know I host Minecraft servers for people all around the world, none of our servers contain dedicated GPU's.

As already mentioned above your upload speed is going to be the biggest issue, it should support 1-3 maybe up to 5 players no problem. After that it will probably start lagging and other (players not inside your local network) will start experiencing high pings etc.

The two things I would suggest upgrading next if your planning on it would be a faster CPU and possibly better internet connection. (If possible)

What OS do you recommend for hosting the server? I will most likely partition my HDD to install a operating system that uses less load on the system.

If you're new to  Linux I suggest you go with Ubuntu, otherwise CentOS would be a nice choice.

To be honest though most Linux distros use roughly the same amount, so just pick one you like using. If you're not interested in using Linux then Windows server 2012/16 is pretty lightweight providing nothing else is running in the background.

Some linux distro. I use Lubuntu (lightweight ubuntu) on my music server at home but I'm sure there's better distros for this case. I think we used Debian at my old company. Anything that's still widely supported should be fine.

good idea, I think Minecraft is way to light running on an Ubuntu Server with those specs.  I suggest using it for something else too.  If you ampersand Minecraft and keep it in the background you can run other servers, like maybe a LAMP Server or a Samba Server for you're windows machines.  Samba uses cores and cpu effectively in transfers so it can help having a 6 core and 8GB of memory in a samba server.

Another option of course is running other game servers too or even a Teamspeak Server.  Due ot several insecurities I suggest NOT running a Teamspeak server unless it's on a VPS.  Because although you may have a NAT firewall with only a few ports forwarded Teamspeak Query access and FTP Access can allow someone to end up gaining access to your system.

Another quick reminder is to make sure your router blocks floods, and blocks other ports and please do not enable a DMZ unless you either need more ports forwarded than your router allows AND you've got IPSec or UFW enabled and active.
