Anyone has any idea how to cool the VRMs further on a tri-x 290x? (With the cooler on too of course)

The only way i can think of is to replace the thermal pads...

If you have the room for, you can attach a cooler to the backside of the PCB.

If you place it rigth under the VRMs it works quite good.

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil

There used to be coolers like the Thermalright HR-11. A little bit of modding and you can stick it onto the VRM section instead of the core.

As slong as you use thermal pads for the whole contact area it can't short something and it's save.

You can also take the backside cooler of the Accelero Xtreme IV 280(X). But buying the whole cooler just for the backside cooler is insane.

How much would that cost? :o

And dayum nice passive 500w build! How much did that cost you?

I wanna do that type of build someday... sadly i dont have access to so many materials as an 18 year old student in a relatively pc-naive country D:

Have you removed the cooler? Does the heatsink make contact with the VRMs directly? VRM1 gets the hottest and thats the strip of chips next to the row of capacitors at the front of the PCB. If the heatsink doesn't make contact with the PCB, you can purchase the GELID solutions 290x vrm kit which I just bought for my 390x. Very pricey for what you get though. I paid $20 usd for about 3 cents worth of aluminum. They are supposed to lower VRM temps significantly though. If the cooler already makes contact with the VRMs, you can replace the thermal pads which is a very easy fix.

Current PC: Origin Millennium- i7 5820K @4.0GHz | GTX 980Ti SLI | X99 Deluxe

It was the VRM temps that made me remove the cooler the first time xD

Not sure... Should i just replace the thermal pads anyways?

Does the GELID solutions fit even with the tri-x cooler attached? Isnt that made to synergise with kraken g10?

If there's already contact with the VRMs then it won't fit. Just replace thermal pads :)

You can get the Accelero S3. It has the same backside cooler and costs "only" 52$.

Nice to see you like my passive build! The cost for the build was spread out over several month and I didn't keep track. I estimate 3 - 4k$.

iamdarkyoshi is considering doing the same but on a much lover cost:

Ouch! 52$?! xD I guess my VRMs will be running hot aha

Holy crap that's pretty expensive... Did like half of your budget went into the heat sinks/ copper blocks and heatpipes?

Yes about halfe the budget was for heat sinks, custom bent heat pipes, impedance matched PCIe riser, metal.....

In the morning it's about 18,5°C in my room. So I start F@H and the 400 watt heater kicks in. After one work unit it's comftable 22°C.

Also then my fingers are cold I can put them onto the 40°C warm heat sinks. Is very nice in winter ;)

Also the PC is designed to be very power efficient. So it's not generating that much heat compared to the compute performance.

Why didnt you sought for sponsers when you were prepping for this? :o

Are sponsers hard to get?

For the next build I may be looking for sponsors. But for this one I hadn't something to show off, as I haven't done  some serious modding before.
