M.2 SSDs : Worth it at all?!

ClobberXD

Is it true M.2 SSDs are frighteningly faster than SATA 6Gb/s SSDs? Are there any disadvantages in investing in one? Also any other advantages?

Thanks!

Nothing to see here ;)

No, don't believe that crap.  Best ones are writing at 1.5-2GB/s.  You will spend a lot more for them.  550MB/s is still fast enough.

Then why in earth are they so pricey? Any other advantages (or disadvantages) ?

Thanks!

P.S. You have an M.2 SSD?

Really?  I would love to see a single drive that can hit 10GB/s.  Please link it.  :)

yeah, SATA 3 can get up to 6Gb/s, and M.2 through PCI-E 3.0 can reach up to 10Gb/s

They are still 3-4x faster:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147425&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

New tech costs more.  They have to pay for all the research and developement.

No, stop.  Your graph shows a high of 1.8GB/s on the Seq. Read.

I have only seen a RAID 0 setup of a ton of Intel NVME drives break 10GB/s.  PCPER guys did it.

it's 10Gb/s i made a mistake, but still seq read/write it much higher dude, it's through PCI-E after all man

Well no...

10Gb/s is pcie2 x2. Pcie3x4 is actually 32Gb/s

Is it worth my money to buy a ~250GB M.2 SSD? Or a regular SSD? 250GB is enough for me, so even if I buy a half-expensive SATA 6Gb/s SSD, I'll stick to 250GB not more.

Thanks!

Do take note, whether M.2 port uses SATA or PCI-E lanes for data transfer. Older M.2 use SATA or PCIe 2.0 lanes, which is limited to 10 Gb/s, which is up to 1.25 GB/s (theoretically, overhead not taken into account), if the storage device is capable of that.

Newer boards (Z170 and few Z97/X99) use newer M.2 with NVMe (sometimes also written as Ultra M.2), that makes use of PCIe 3.0 x4 lanes with bandwidth up to 32 Gb/s. This is where the newer Samsung 950 SSDs really shine.

only nvme ssd's are faster. Older AHCI drives won't provide a performance increase. I recommend a 950 pro.

That's too expensive... Well, it's NVMe, for God's sake!

Thank you for your recommendation though!

you could use any m.2 ssd , but a lot of them usually use the sata bus instead of the pcie bus , which means they will still be around 550-600MB/s. But you have no cables that way.

Yes, that's a common mistake people do with M.2-drives. The basic,  AHCI-drives, are just meant for laptops and SFF-builds and when you want to be really compact. They max out at SATAIII-speeds at 6 Gbit/s. To get speeds faster than that, you'll need to opt for the newer NVMe-drives, which samsung has now released with their 950 PRO-series of M.2-drives.

here's a review of them: http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/samsung-950-pro-m-2-ssd-review,1.html
