Xeon or i7 video editing/gaming 1080p

Tasuma

Hey all! As the title says. I'm getting into video editing and curious if I upgrade, which I should grab? I'm leaning towards the Xeon because I have a dedicated gpu and don't care about iGPU. Granted can't really OC a Xeon iirc. :)

It would depend. On the LGA 1150 platform, you have overclockable, quad-core, hyperthreaded i7s and non-overclockable quad-core, hyperthreaded Xeons for a slightly lower price.

On the LGA 2011-3 platform, you have six and eight-core i7s (with 12 and 16 threads respectively) that are overclockable, and non-overclockable Xeons with up to 18 cores (36 threads). It's going to depend on your platform, your budget, and what exactly you want to do, although I'd still recommend a core i7 4790k for this, and a Xeon E3 1231-v3 at a lower budget.

6700k is faster newer, supports ddr4

Looked up OP's specs- he's on the 1155 platform with an i5 3570k. He hasn't yet made clear whether he only wants to upgrade his CPU or his motherboard as well.

I do plan on upgrading platforms. :) I wanna give my dad my old chip set for work.

If you're serious about video editing and have a super-high budget, then go x99 and get a six-core CPU like the 5820k. If you have a slightly lower budget, you can still make do with a B85 board and a Xeon E3 1231-v3 (the Gigabyte B85M-D3H supports it right out of the box and even has room for crossfire).

Thanks for the advice! Didn't even think of getting a B85 with a xeon. I'm derp. :P

Most people don't even think of it. In fact, some H81 boards probably support the Xeon E3 1231-V3 as well.

I know for a fact that the Gigabyte B85M-D3H and B85M-DS3H-A support this, as it's on the list of supported CPUs even with the base BIOS (no update required, it works out of the box!). If you're looking at crossfire as a possible upgrade, go for the D3H, as it supports crossfire with two PCI-e 3.0 x16 slots (one running at x4, still enough for crossfire). However, if you're getting the D3H, try to get your hands on the Rev 1.0 version. That's the version everyone talks about when they say the model is great, and it can even overclock K CPUs. However, the Rev 1.1, Rev 2.0, and Rev 3.0 versions have several issues.

It'll say on the label if you pick it up in-store, or you can call support and ask if you're buying it online, so it shouldn't be too hard to find out.

There was a handy little MSI board- the H81M-P33 (E34 if you want USB 3.0 headers). I think that might support it too.

I am prob going with asrock B85 and it does support xeon. :) I am also switching over to ITX because small!
