Im giving my nexus 6 to a buddy who is on tmobile and im on att. Both gsm. However, my buddy is saying once he puts a sim in it requires a unlock pin.

If you meet these requirements: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1588

Then you can have T-Mobile unlock it. If not, then there are sketchy websites that will do it(assuming they are somewhat legit), but it will cost $.

You need to fill this form to get the unlock code.

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/

Weird I thought they were unlocked.

Same here, I also thought they were unlocked. I just filled that out but could take 2 business days. Any way to speed up the process?

Im also concerned due to the phone i currently have isnt the IMEI they have on file. My ex threw my phone in a starbucks and broke the screen, the origional nexus they have on file that is. I RMA'ed it to Motorola and they sent me a new phone but they never switched my IMEI on file with ATT. Will that be a problem?

Yeah. In that case you might not be able to unlock it. I'd call Customer service.

You need to sign into your email to confirm the unlock. It is an automated process and takes less than a day(from my experience).

If you have proof that they RMA'd it then they should be able to switch the IMEI's, just you might have to go into a retail store or call their customer support.

Okay, thanks.

ATT customer service was pointless; all they did was point me to the online forum.

Motorola wont answer because it's a Sunday, so i guess im calling first thing tomorrow.

I have everything they would need. Multiple emails from the Motorola RMA/Repair team.

But when i tried to trade in the Nexus towards my new phone, they wouldnt accept it because the IMEI didnt match up.

I dont think the retail stores can do much.

I would call their customer support then, although I can see them making an issue out of "not replacing the device within AT&T", but its worth a try. This is why I don't buy carrier devices lol.

The reason is because you might not have paid the phone you actually bought off yet etc.

I know they do that if you get their ATT next plan.

Did you check your email for the unlock confirmation?

Phone has been well paid off for a few months now.

And yes, email confirmation said "We are processing your request and should get back to you within 2 business days"
