i was wondering what the differences between brushless and brushed motors are like which one is better in mud and water. how they work.

Brushless use magnets and is in a sealed canister while brushed motors uses brushing which is pretty well just copper. Neither of them do "well" in water since their electronics. There any many youtube videos explaining this.

So for instance crawling you would want to use a brushed motor vs a brushless, since cogging and getting stuck between poles(magnetic poles) are an issue. Typically these problems are solved with a "sensored" motor, but sensored motors don't fare well in water so sensorless is recommended. If you are running a stadium truck/4x4/buggy/etc. in mud and water, then a regular brushless motor will be much better, especially since they generally allow for higher RPM's.

 

If you are crawling and want to use brushless though, its worth modifying an outrunner motor to fit on your motor mount. Outrunner motors generally have more torque(sacrificing speed) when compared to in-runners, and they also cog less.

 

This is just from my personal experience though, I'm not a pro.

I have typically found that brushless motors work a lot better in water and mud

Brushed motors have little copper brushes touching the rotor of the motor inside making contact. These wear out over time and it dirty or muddy water they get gunked up and it doesn't make good contact so they stop working. Brushless motors are sealed and use magnets. They last way longer and are 100% waterproof in mud and clean water. They also have better tuning like drag brake and don't COG. Brushless is also more powerful and can take more power. For their full effect use Lipo batteries as they can supply enough power for them. Brushless motors also need to be paired with a brushless ESC. Brushless is more exspensive but by the time you burn out 5 brushed motors you have equalled the cost of one brushless. You can also fix brushless motors with rotor replacement and much more. I run all brushless it is the way to go

There are plenty of advantages and disadvantages to either setup. It's true that brushless motors would yield better efficiency and power, but brushed can offer more uses for cheaper. If you do a little research about rc rock crawlers you will see that most people will use brushed motors because they are able to deal with wet conditions better. There are quite a number of "waterproof" electronics coming out for the rc world. I would refer to these as more water resistant than anything else. Some hobbyists are using plastidip to cover the motor casings and the servos and radio boxes to ensure waterproofing.

Short answer is Brushed motors are waterproofed electronics will probably be the best way to go. Not to mention that if you burn one up it won't cost an arm and a leg to replace it. Most of my brushless setups for speed control and motor are around 300 dollars. They are typically used for my 2wd race buggies and rc drift cars.

Brushless motors need a special controller they do not run on DC power.

I find nitro to be better for beater vehicles unless it is a crawler. In my experience, brushless is usually considered when speed or longevity in good conditions are important, brushed when conditions are otherwise. Brushed motors can wear out faster (the "brushes" literally wear out). On the flip side, ESCs for brushed motors are usually cheaper than for brushless, but not always.

Brushless motors for cars and trucks are sealed so they are (99% sure on this one) water proof. Brushless motors also produce a LOT more power than their brushed counter parts. I haven't looked in a while, but I'm sure it's a lot cheaper now to get a nice brushless motor and ESC for your truck. I know LiPo's have come down a lot in price, the ones for my 280 multirotor were about $25-30 a piece.

Bah, a huge topic. 20 years ago I broke in brushes and bushings on brushed motors by immersing them in water. There sure isn't the widespread support these days for brushed motors that there used to be. I'd still use them for crawlers simply because they cannot cog, plus they inherently make scads more controllable low-end torque. Can't beat brushless for a high end screamer or something with traction tho... Still, YouTube is okay, but Wikipedia would be a great bet for answers here. Be patient. There is a lot to learn.

Brushed motors are the way to go in water and mud because they won't short out like brushless sensored motors will. I use my rc rock crawler in water all the time and as long as ya hose it down and tear down the motors for maintenance from time to time they last for friggin ever!!!

Check ebay frequently sometimes you can find a brushed motor com cutter. Hobbyking.com has a decent brush cutter for pretty cheap. As for breaking in brushed motors we used to break em in in a mix of water, coke a cola, WD40, simple green, and tooth paste. It polished the com and broke in the brushes pretty well. Just had to clean em out with motor cleaner and repel the bearings afterwards. We used mouse milk machine oil and I gotta tell ya that stuff is AMAZING as bearing oil!!!!!
