Core i5's

Go to solution Solved by DaltonM,

Honestly, as far as gaming goes the 4690k is good enough for both set ups. I would be careful going up to skylake processors as DDR4 adds a lot of cost right now. With the fury you can overclock, but the CPU isn't a bottleneck for most games when you're running a 4690k

So im planning computers for both of my friends. They have diffrent approaches and budgets, but my plan so far is a R9 390X in one of them and a R9 Fury non-X in the other one. But i dont know what CPU to combine the GPU's with.

Im  thinking about some kind of Core i5.

So my question is, What is the best CPU to power an AMD R9 390X? And what is the best to power an AMD R9 Fury?

Is a 6600K a good guess for the Fury (not shure about this one), and a 4690k good enough fot the 390X (pretty shure it would work) ?

that sounds good actually, i would recommend a 6600k for both but if the budget is tight your idea is good.

You could even use the 4460 if they do not want to overclock

I never recommend the 4460 because it's a throw away chip. When the 4690k becomes a bottleneck (years down the line) you can OC it to gain a few years out of it.

But if DDR4 is on sale, is the choise of the 6600K bad?

Cause if DDR4 prices is the only bat thing about a skylake, is there any diffrence?

I know, just saying if money was an issue

The CPU is one of the most expensive parts, I feel that $50 extra between the 4460 and 4690k is super worth the price of admission.

But if you have a system to hand the 4460 down to, it'd be a good choice. But as your sole gaming rig, you're going to want something more flexible.

here are your options:

4590 or 6500

4690 or 6600

4690k or 6600k

Basically yeah. Mainstream gamers don't even need DDR4 really. You can get under 10FPS improvement, but it's not going to be the thing to push you into 4k or 1440p or 144hz gaming.

If you're going to creating content or doing intensive work DDR4 is more worth it. But for a budget minded gamer, 16gb of DDR3 will serve you for the foreseeable future.

Personally I would save some money and go for an i5 6400. You can get it from Jet.com for $160 with the code 15NOW. Keep in mind it is pretty powerful, and later on can be base clock overclocked on a compatible Z170/H170 motherboard for an increase in performance. (Base clock OC should still be good enough for 4-4.4ish)

I like good humans and good food
