£2,000 Gaming Laptop for a UK Lad?

monkeycid

A'right there!

I have been saving up over the Christmas holidays for a new laptop. I currently own an Alienware 17 and whilst I have nothing bad about it, there isn't really anything remarkable about it either. I am looking for either a pre-built laptop or one that is built to order using one of the many UK websites such as PC Specialist and I will be using the laptop strictly for playing games and the occasional movie.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

MATX SLI or something...

With some long ITX case you could potentially have a 295x2...

But yeah, those are valid. I'd look towards getting a used GT80 Titan, because I'm insane.

Sig under construction.

My friend, why are you so rich?

My advice get a thin and light for like £600 and then spend your meager £1400 on a really quite adequate desktop.

I think you should go to pcspecialist.com as you said and spec yourself an overpowered laptop which will put many desktops to shame. I think they have a model with G-sync, 4k, desktop Skylake and desktop GTX 980 for less than £2000.

Alternatively, you can get yourself the thin and light Gigabyte P35X V5 CF1 (i7 6700, 980M, 4k monitor, nmve ssd) from either scan or OCUK for about £1800.

All the options above come with the Tomb Raider promo, which is pretty cool IMO.

I would love nothing more than desktop but don't have the necessary space in my bedroom. I will post a picture if I can of my desk so you have better understanding.

There are so many choices these days which is why I came here to try to narrow those options down. Should I go with MSI, Acer, Alienware, etc? Or a website such as PC Specialist, Cyberpower UK and build the best I can for the budget I have?

Reliability and longevity are the main factors. Something that will last 3 years or more.

You might want to look at the sager laptops they are a good value at that price point for laptops.  Also the alienware 17 is a good option too, it all really comes down to what features you would prefer over each brand as they all have some things that another brand doesn't have.

Longevity? In which case you can go to pcspecialist and spec one of their laptops to your heart's content, (remember to cross out the £79 WinX OS and buy a cheap key yourself, they put the inactivated shelll for you) and then buy the 3 year 'gold' warranty on top of it. I called them a few weeks ago and they specifically said you can upgrade your warranty plan within the first 9 months of your purchase if you don't max the warranty initially, kinda like Applecare.

Here is a picture of my desk. Alienware on the left, mouse on the right and the laptop battery behind. Not much space for anything else and the cabinet below isn't really deep enough to hold a gaming case.

This should be good for you. You should be able to get a desktop 6700, 980M, G-Sync, some beast SSDs and you're good to go.

Would you choose a custom build over the branded laptops? My head is really up in the air at the moment.

I just want the best laptop for gaming that I can afford.

I found this

Intel Core i7 6700K, Skylake, Quad Core with Hyperthreading, 4.0GHz, 4.2GHz Turbo

16GB Hynix (2x8GB) - 2133MHz, CAS 15-15-15-36, 1.2V

2 x 8GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M, 1038MHz GPU, 1536 Cores, 5000MHz RAM.1920 x 1080 FullHD G-Sync IPS panel

512GB Samsung 950 Pro, PCIe Gen3 x4, NVME, up to 2500MB/s Read, 1500MB/s Write, 300K IOPS

Qualcomm Killer 1535 M.2, 867Mbps, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac

The above setup costs £2573.95. A little over budget but those 980M SLI cards are a beast.

Can I do better than this in the UK?

No hard drives?

^ Same machine, but slightly cheaper I think. They don't have the 950 Pro though, so the SM951 is the next best thing.

I chose more or less the same setup.

Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-6700k (4.0GHz) 8MB Cache

16GB HyperX IMPACT 2133MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 8GB)
2 x NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 980M - 8.0GB DDR5 Video RAM, DirectX® 12, G-SYNC
250GB Samsung 850 2.5" EVO SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
1TB Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND (£9)
GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® AC-8260 M.2 (867Mbps, 802.11BGN) + BLUETOOTH

All for £2,465.00. If I chose the same SDD/HDD options on Scan.co.uk then the price would be in the mid 2,700s.

Is this a good spec for gaming?

Oh hell yes, no doubt about it. Just that you may break your back like 10 times in one day if you plan on carrying it to somewhere.
