rate this £1000 build

Lmao @ "BX200 is fishy" kk.

The BX200 is great, it's almost as fast as the 850-EVO but a good bit cheaper. 850-EVO is great, I have one, but when the price difference is significant enough, the BX200 makes more sense. As for case, I'd be getting the Define S and saving £10 instead of taking Thermaltake's blatantly coped version of a Define case. I see no reason to stick with Haswell at this point, go with Skylake, it's not significantly more expensive and you could easily get a nice Skylake rig within your budget.

No reason to spend the premium on a 6700k IMO since you can OC the 6700 anyway. You could spend the extra £20 for the 6700k if you wish. 2TB HDD as it's only £10 more than the 1TB and 1TB is fairly minimal these days. I already need a 2nd 2TB HDD after only 6 months. Still get your 16GB RAM, R1(great cooler), and 240GB SSD(swap for the 850-EVO if you wish, and don't mind paying the extra £10, however, the BX200 is still great). You can either use an external optical drive or get a Define R4/R5 instead of the Define S.

Damn, that is one solid build. I made the original one (with the exception of the Thermafake case) and thought Haswell Refresh would be the best way to go, but my eyes have been slightly opened. Slightly.

The Haswell chips will continue to drop in price, not to mention that they are still very solid performers. However, in best preparing for the future like the Z170 chipset and DDR4, Skylake may be the way to go. In my opinion, I would still spring the extra for the k-series chip. The locked chips can be overclocked, but we are not certain as to the long term effects of doing this. My opinions may change, but for the time being, I'm going to say stick to k-series if you plan to overclock. My only contradiction regarding this would be the i3 chips, which are well worth overclocking.

Haswell's obviously still fine, of course, and would make sense to go with if it's really cheap, but I'd just go with Skylake at this point and DDR4, no reason not to IMHO. I have a 4790k myself, and really can't recommend one at this point since it's an old architecture, and there's just no need. I would recommend sticking with a k skew CPU if you specifically want to overclock, just makes more sense. However, if OP is on the fence, or doesn't really care, the 6700 would be fine. Then again, the difference is only £20 at the moment so I see no reason not to spend the extra £20 for the k skew. Some of the i3s I've sen have OCed like champs, those things are impressive. I want to swap out my Maximus VII Hero and 4790k for a Skylake i3 and nice Z170 mobo lol, would be fun to get a hold of one and OC

No need for an i7 unless you're doing video editing I think. I could be wrong but from a gaming standpoint i5 is way better. The ssd is fine. Check out asrock z170 + i5-6500. You can OC locked cpus with asrock z710 boards. Just food for thought. Also instead of an r9 390 get an r9 390.

Edit: z710 to z170

An i5 isn't better at gaming, that title still falls to the i7. More rather that, in most cases, the marginal increase in performance from going for an i7 does not justify its premium over the high end i5. However, this is becoming less of the case where games are starting to benefit from the hyperthreading.

Well, no, i7's are still better than i5's, in all aspects. They're literally the same CPU, the i5 just has a lower stock clock speed and HT disabled. However, if the rig is solely for gaming, then yes, OP would be better off with an i5-6500(or 6600k).

*Z170. Not sure if typo, or genuine mistake so correcting just in case. Not just Asrock boards now, they were first but you can do it with Asus and MSI motherboards now as well, SuperMicro have a board out there for it, and I think some other companies too. Gigabyte probably support it, but I've not seen anything on Gigabyte motherboards. Even if they don't, they probably will soon enough. I'd recommend an Asus/MSI board over Asrock, just due to personal experience, though Asrock are still a perfectly good company to go with.

Also instead of an r9 390 get an r9 390.

Wot?

That Z710 was a mistype. Opps. Did not know other boards can do that now thanks for the update! And last part was a joke. I meant the i5 for price to performance is better for gaming. Not literally performance.

Thought it might have been a typo, but wasn't too sure lol. Asrock were first on the scene I think, but MSI and Asus quickly followed. It was obvious other companies would do it though, considering it just requires a BIOS update, and more vendors will get in on it too probably, if they haven't already. Yeah, I thought you meant that an i5 just makes more sense in a gaming rig, but again, wasn't entirely sure so corrected just in case.

All good mate! No offense taken. :) I'll work on being more specific when posting. I sometimes forget people can be new to this whole pc thing.

PSU is terrible. Not sure why you changed it. The EVGA G2/GS units are good, the G1 units(one you chose) are terrible. Also not sure why you insist on sticking with those Thermaltake cases which are just poorer versions of Fractal Design cases.

because the case looks mint???? could you edit it with a PSU which could actually power the whole unit including maybe 3 monitors

The PSU i already linked in a parts list above. The case is literally the exact same aesthetics as Fractal Design Define cases, which are the same price, or cheaper, and built better. That's why I told you to get that instead, ignore Thermaltake cases.
