My grandma has DirecTV now and so far it's been fairly nice. The TV service is great, she actually has HD for once, and it goes out about as much as Dish did (which wasn't very often). The internet is more reliable and a LOT faster, and so far I'm happy.

Other than one thing. One HUGE thing. The fucking DVR.

You can't get your bloody shows off the damned thing. I recorded a LOT of shows in the hopes that I would be able to get them to my crap drive, a 3TB WD My Passport. But do you think I can? NO. As it looks, I would have to get a 1080p capture card and literally record the recording of the show. Like, who the fuck decided this was a good idea? Sure, it might cut down on piracy or something, but for fucks sake.

It would at least be okay if you could watch the fucking shows on your computer. It comes up on the network as a MEDIA DEVICE FOR FUCKS SAKE.

There are a few regional providers that allow recording off the DVR. The problem lies in how they assign the copy control info. Most providers set it to copy never when it should be set to copy free or copy once as per the content distributor.

Just torrent it instead of ripping the DVR.

Some Concept executed differently.

Oh yeah, and then spend forever finding all the episodes and then literally months to download it?

Hypothetically

not saying i know or not

The process isn't that long. and there's some corn that pops that also helps.

We have a single Sky box to which we are recording everything they are airing that we watch to our NAS.  We try to watch as many things as possible off of the NAS so our internet bill isn't that high.  I run the NAS so that everyone can access and I let my friends down the street use it as well since the signal is strong enough to get there surprisingly.  They can buy more storage if they wish to.  Got our on little server running.

It will take forever to find and download 200+ episodes, especially when the internet is a meager 3Mbps when I'm the only one there.

Not to mention it likes to corrupt large downloads.

I think it has to do to the TV networks. You know the whole copy right, we want you to buy a license for each device bull crap. My sister has Dish Network and they have a external hard drive connected to their DVR or else they would be screwed. One thing I would like to mention. The FCC is review new rules that would allow the consumer to buy Cable boxes, so maybe when that goes in to effect it will allow you to get the shit off your DVR.

One thing is though. My understanding is that that content is locked to the DVR. I dont think you can even use a capture device.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Eh, if it doesn't work I'll still have reasons to use it so i guess it's not really a loss all around. Assuming I can even get one.
