Why, Intel?

xox

Why does Intel have to keep updating Pentium? Everything has it's day, Pentium's day was gone 3 years ago. Why release Haswell ones, Intel?

Compatible with Windows 95

What's wrong with them? $70* and you get decent performance.

You can get a little less than twice the performance at not very much more if you get an i3. If someone doesn't need the power, then they can always buy a used PC.

And why should they have to buy a used PC because they don't need much power? There is no reasoning to your argument....

The answer is 42.
Oh, wait, you mean to tell me you need to know the question now?
Well, I can't answer that.

It's just that the Pentium is outdated. Should they not change the branding up a bit. Pentium seems awfully old. Pentium is from the days of old, the 'Core i' Series are those of new. I wasn't trying to say that they should completely discontinue selling dual-core chips only, just should they not update the branding?

I think they should keep updating them, during the binning process why destroy all of the chips that don't make it to Core i3 level.

At least reuse them in the lower grade Pentium lines, if the chip works perfectly fine though not as a Core i3 you may as well use it.

Why? Branding means nothing.

they stick to this branding because non tech savvy people are used to it and have come to rely on it so a newer model Pentium is something they can understand, same goes for celeron.

and usually these chips are exactly in the requirement level these people need.

Celeron usually arrives after pentium so they mights still release them if they really want to although pentium is so affordable it's basically useless.

But a single core is really irrelevant now

Celeron has been dual core for a while now.

I think it should be renamed.

At first i was going to say get rid of it because for the money your could get an amd systemwhich is cheaper to upgrade later on.
nobody who doesnt need a powerful pc who needs a cheap pc should in thier right mind buy one of those chips, a core 2 duo second hand would be better for those people.

the reason intel have kept the name is because allot of old misguided people still think pentium=high end so its intel purely misguiding people and they know it.
my friend still has fond memories of his pentium d 940.......he doesnt seem to realise that its just 2 pentium 4's which get thier ass handed to them by a £35 athlon x2, ignorance is bliss.

if intel wants to sell them thats fine but drop the blatant missguiding of innocent consumers.

They are great for people who want cheap systems and they make LGA 1150 Pentiums in order to keep up with the socket changes which is great imo.

Actually you get 25% more performance for almost twice the price.  I was seeing G2xxx for around 55-60 dollars last week.  The Pentiums are a great chip for every day use or for programs that are single threaded (WoW anyone?)

My PC: CPU: I7-2600K CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Evo, Mother Board: MSI Z77 Mpower, Ram: 4x4GB DDR3 1600MHz CL9 Corsair Vengeance (Black), Case: HAF 932, PSU: CM GX 650 (Upgrading to RM750 soon), SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 120GB SSD, HD:  750GB Seagate 7200 RPM, Optical: Samsung Blu-ray burner, GPU: MSI GTX 560 TI Twin Frozr (Upgrading to an HD R9-290X on launch)

People who need basic systems probably don't need to keep up with the latest socket

Well motherboards with older sockets and cpus are becoming non existent so keeping up with the latest socket will mean that you will be able to buy a cpu with a motherboard that you would be able to find today.
