MacBook Pro issue

My sister has a MacBook pro from 2012.  She upgraded it to OS X Yosemite a few months back and now the system is running extremely slow.  She been tolerating it for the last few month, but now it's become more of an issue/annoyance.  The system takes a long time to boot up, certain applications don't work properly, or efficiently, and it sometimes gives trouble if more than a few applications are open. The specs are 4gb of RAM, an i7 cpu (I didn't check, but I think it's a quad-core), 750gb HDD, and nothing else too special really.  If you need more information, I can try and get it, but this is all I know about it right now.  Is this an issue where she should get more RAM, or is this something else?  Thanks for the help.

I'd be very surprised if it was a quad core.

 

That said, your problem is probably that hdd - most likely a 5400rpm piece of garbage. An ssd would probably solve most of the problems.

I think her problem is having the mac

My 2011 MBP with similar specs was also running really slow. Try upgrading to an SSD.

Note that the cooling fans are probably very dusty and so i would suggest giving them a clean and perhaps even reapplying thermal paste.

Replace the HDD with an SSD, modern day operative systems literally require you to have one installed. That's the kind of issue that struck me in 2011 with a baseline 13" MacBook Pro, noticeably slower compared to when I moved to a faster MacBook Pro with an SSD inside.

The general consensus seems to be upgrade. I'll talk to her about it, but I might try to reinstall the OS first, or maybe even try finding the older version she was running to "fix" the issue before having her spend more money on the machine.  Thanks!

Slap an SSD in there and Apple does this on purpose by the way so you will buy a new laptop. They have gotten sued many times. This is why I don't upgrade past 2 years of when it was made, only buy mac pros, and always put your own SSD in there

I'm just surprised that didn't ship with an SSD. My Dell of the same year has one. Albeit only 120GB, but it was $1300 cheaper.
