How to prep a GPU for subzero

This is just going to be a quick guide I'm going to make, as it's my first time going subzero on a GPU.

I've done my CPU 3-4 times now, with some great results, (up to 6 ghz on dry ice @ -64c)

I recently bought a gtx 480 off ebay to practice on, before I do it to my 980 TI Matrix.

 

 

 

 

First off, supplies:

 

You can find this about anywhere, from what I've heard, it's really easy to apply, and quite easy to peel off with no damage to your card. It can be quite messy, so make sure you have lots of paper towels or Kleenex to wipe it up if you get it on somewhere you don't want.

 

This is referred to as "LET" in many places. (Liquid Electrical Tape)

LET will protect your card from any moisture that forms on it during benchmarking, protecting all the circuitry and everything from "shorting" out and killing something.  (You don't want this obviously!)

Secondly, you'll need maybe some smaller paint brushes to get in the small nooks and crannies of your card. (Inbetween VRM and stuff like that)

 

 

Now that you have supplies, you'll obviously want to take apart the card and clean all the dust as best as you can.

 

 

 

 

 

After that's done, you may want to mask off your GPU die, or IHS in the case of a 480/580 fermi ETC.

Make sure you don't get it on the PCI-E slot, or SLI fingers.   If you get it on the memory chips, it's no big deal.  The PCB will cool the VRM, because the PCB will get very cold. 

 

 

Here are the areas you'll want to cover, everything in yellow.

 

Just try not to get anything on the VRM, you want the VRM to be able to dissipate as much heat as possible, so lathering LET all over them is no good!

 

 

 

 

You'll most likely want to do a few coats, it peels off easier if it's thicker.  This will also help make sure you get all the nooks and crannies, by doing it a few times.

On the back of the card, you can literally coat the whole thing.   Just make sure you don't need to do any voltage mods first, you will need to do those first.  Otherwise trying to find the solder points will be difficult.

why use a 480 it's too slow.. get a titan if you need faster instead of ln2

Apparently sandy bridge doesn't scale very well with subzero, @Jumper118 knows more about that though, maybe he can explain

heh, if only it was cold. That piece of shit goes to 80°C easily, short of 90 even. I gotta pump so much voltage through it to have a somewhat stable 4.7

I got a 580 Matrix coming soon too as well, got it for super cheap along with a digital thermometer with 2 inputs on it, so I can monitor 2 temps at once.

 

It's already prepped for Ln2 as well and apparently does 1000 mhz on air fairly easily.

I was also going to get a 9800 GTX+ that's already voltage modded and everything, but I didn't want to spend the extra $25 because I didn't get paid much last week.

And most of the WR 480s have seen Ln2 treatment and dice is only good for around -60. need lower temps to reduce resistance
