DVI vs HDMI

Lamb

I always hear everyone saying use DVI and not HDMI, but what is the difference? Is it actually better to use DVI? If so I would like an explanation. I use HDMI at the moment, but it is only because I don't have any DVI cables. Should I really switch?

DVI can do higher resolution and higher refresh rate.  HDMI can carry audio.

Both carry digital signals. HDMI carries audio additional to the video. DVI is just video.

What is the max refresh rate of both of the cables?

if you have displayport , that is the best, speed and bandwith of duallink dvi and carry audio like hdmi, so if you have this i would use it( i know this is alittle off topic)

I'm pretty sure HDMI is DVI but it carries sound and maxes out at 1080p or 1440p, can't remember.

Newest had I does 4k..... AT 24 HZ

Edit: STUPID autocorrect newest HDMI does 4k at 25hz

Double check everything, I am usually wrong.

Dual link DVI can do 144hz.  HDMI can do 60hz.  These are both at 1080p.

Agreed, display port if by far best, and by far newest! Not to mention by far more expensive!

Hdmi is also a pretty fragile connector on the physical side.

My Graphics card has displayport, but my monitor doesn't. If I ever get a monitor that supports it I would definitely use it!

HDMI is designed for home theater equipment.  The actual video feed is the same between the two, however the controllers are different; HDMI can sometimes have strange issues when used with computer monitors, and also the non-locking connector is very annoying.  Even the terrible VGA/DVI style screws are better.  HDMI carries sound, but the video bandwidth cap is lower (max 720p @ 120Hz, or 1080p @ 60Hz, approximately) compared to DVI (1920x1080 @ 144Hz or 1440p @ 60Hz, approximately) because the designers didn't care about anything beyond 1080p, again, only designed with home theater in mind.

I've had HDMI not work on first boot with several different GPU's when doing builds. DVI and DP always work, sometimes HDMI works, sometimes it doesn't. I stay away from it and always use DP and if not then DVI.
